COMPLETED: Ferrari 575 Superamerica

This has just been published in Scale Auto Magazine, so I can show it here now.

It's Revell's Ferrari 575 Superamerica built mostly OOB. Overall it's a pretty nice kit; a few assembly tricks but nothing major. The roof operates very nicely. The interior detail is far superior to a Fujimi 575; especially seats and door panels. Kit has a full engine and chassis detail (no pics though), and I was surprised at how good the stock wheels/tires/brakes detail out w/proper masking, painting, and washes. I didn't particularly care for the design of the brakes sandwiched in between the wheel halves, but honestly the finished look is fine by me.

Paint is airbrushed Tamiya TS Mica Red over a TS gold base w/airbrush and spray can TS clear. SMS C/F for details, TS Sand for the interior color. I airbrushed TS Smoke onto the exterior part of the clear roof panel and polished it out.

I cut the front axles down a bit so the wheels would have some leeway to mount up a bit higher; stock ride height is too tall. After photos were submitted to the magazine I peeled off the stock emblem decals and used Crazy Modeler etched emblems. Much better :sunglasse

I'll probably build my next Fujimi 575 Maranello coupe using a lot of the Revell kit for detail. In fact I may just section out the roof/decklid from the Fujimi kit and splice it into the main Revell body section.

I don't have the Fujimi Superamerica to compare to the Revell, but I've built a Fujimi 550 Maranello and I'm happy w/both of them. In the US the Superamerica kit retails for about $16, though I got a pair for $9/apiece on sale. Considering the full detail and the 3-piece optional rims and the Revell US molded-in-white plastic, the kit is a bargain on this side of the planet. I see Revell USA just announced the 599 GTB Fiorano, so it'll be nice to get that one in pure white as well.

Beautiful job. I love the paint color. It looks better in these pics than the pic in Scale Auto.

Must be the first finished Superamerica from Revell for me. You´re right, the wheels are not bad at all. Great cf-detail at the roof!

Bob, that is absolutely gorgeous. Perfect paint, perfect CF and just phenomenal build.
I have to admit to stealing a few glances in your fotki album though.

Great inspiration piece to other builders starting that kit. Thanks for sharing!

You did a very good job on this kit, the finished item looks superb! Glad you've had much mor luck than me with straightness of the body.

I know you know that Superamericas come with aluminium petrol tank lids and judging by the hood deviated from the factory stock colour scheme on purpose, right? Also did you build need to be box stock for the magazine review? (Referring to the missing raised shield under the Cavallino on the trunk lid).

Yes, has to be OOB for the review.

As for the gas lid, everything is custom on a Ferrari, so it's conceivable a customer would order one this way. Ferrari didn't offer a black grille on the 599 GTB, but my friend got it in black anyway (his is the car seen in recent photos for the KA models kit).

Not sure about the raised shield under the Cavallino. The C/F on the hood is there because I burned through the clearcoat into the color when wetsanding :shakehead so I decided to cover it vs. respray. I also chose to do the grille black because in kit chrome it looked awful, the grille bars are far too thick.

Great build as always! Your photography really shows off the model. Great work!

Did Revell finally make a decent set of rims/tires? These are stock?

This sounds suspiciously like a Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon....:sunglasse Is this available at HL yet?

Wow, incredibly shiny!

Superb detailing as always, the top looks to fit just perfectly, it's not at all like the kit I had, where that part was warped like hell!

Eitherway, thanks for sharing all of your presciouses here!

Thanks. Yes, these are the stock wheels that come w/the kit.

Dunno about Hobby Lobby having them, I got the kits from a different source, and Scale Auto sends donated review kits from the manufacturers to the builders. I've also seen the SA @ Wal Mart for about $12 or so.

Ales, I just saw a picture that showed the shield under the Cavallino. Never noticed that before! I wonder if Fujimi molded in that shield, kind of like how they engraved the shields and Cavallino on the 599?

Just perfect like usual. I never knew the candy apple red deal from tami turns out so nice. I'd tested it, but never sprayed a whole car. Definitely will now. Keep up the great work Bob!

Same here... I purchased the RoG version and it had a warped roof. :banghead:

Bob, the car looks great! There is no way pictures can ever do justice to the color of this car in person. The Mica Red over Gold is awesome!

Thanks :sunglasse

I saw the National Geographic special on the Ferrari factory yesterday, there was a 599 in the same basic color on that show that looked incredible. I don't like "Rosso Corsa" red on Ferraris, but when it's a pearl that's a whole 'nother story. I'll bet the new F1 color is awesome in person.

As for the roof, of the 3 SA's in my posession one was warped, the others were fine. I was able to completely straighten the warped frame by just applying a bit of "opposite direction pressure" on the part, the plastic is soft enough to allow this w/o breaking. Be careful, but it will straighten. Though I'm not sure if the properties of the white plastic in my kit are the same as the gray frame that's in your Revell AG version.

A bigger problem would be if the glass panels were warped. If they're not, they'll also help the frame if you are careful with gluing the glass in place under a bit of pressure. If the glass is warped, it's better to get a replacement.

Fujimi does have the shield molded underneath the Cavallino.

Interesting. I didn't even know the 1:1 had the shield until I looked real close at some photos; doesn't show up very well on most photos I've seen. Oh well, it's not exactly something that's keeping me up at night...I actually like the "shield-less" look better anyway. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, seems pointless to me even on the real car! Guess its some design flair.

I ordered these wheels to put on my Tamiya 360 spider. I'm going to convert them somehow to the Tamiya kit. Already, though, they are bigger and stretch out the tamiya tires. Any suggestions on the best way to put these wheels on the Tamiya kit and what tires to use? I'm creating a replica of my friend's triple black 360 spider, which have these multi-piece wheels.

Yikes, engineering the Revell wheels to fit a Tamiya 360 isn't going to be easy. The Tamiya brakes are so far outboard and the 360 wheels have such thin spokes that you will have to do a complete re-engineering of something to get the Revell wheels on it. Dunno about tires either.

You might have to ditch the Tamiya brakes to have any chance of getting these wheels fully inside the wheel openings.
