I've always used the lowest grade in all my vehicles with no problem. Try it and if you start getting some 'ping' then go up a grade. I know Ramblin Fever always had to run a higher grade in his or it would ping for some reason.

Yeap, Gizzy's right, mine's a pinger if given 85 octane; she just flat runs like CRAP. Never been able to figure out why; but, what do ya do.

In Colorado, there's 85, 87, 89/91 octane. When I lived in Vegas, NV there was 87, 91 & 93 - truck ran good, but pinged horrible in the desert irregardless of octane used.

I'd start with your 87 octane first; if you start climbing a mild hill and get some ping, check & change your spark plugs (NGK's are GREAT); fuel filter, and PCV valve.

Use GOOD gas, i.e. Shell, phillips 66, etc. do NOT use just any mom-pop shop gas, doesn't pay off in the long run to be cheap on gas quality.

Mine runs great on 87 octane & NGK plugs - I use Shell gas almost exclusively.

If your climbing a long, pretty aggressive hill, slight ping is to be expected.

Would love to see a pic - I'm partial to the 1st generation Rodeo's.

87 - cheapest and lowest grade they sell in my neck of the woods.

I'll tell you what I won't do again... I put the Wal-mart cheapo oil in for about 100 miles after I got back from my trip up north because there was no Valvoline 10W-30 on the shelf. The stuff was syrupy...actually sticky feeling. I used it anyway, thinking 3K of it can't do any harm. This morning I drained it and put the Valvoline back in. The truck just sounded like it was working too hard or something. Now it's back to its smooth running self. I won't use it again, even if it is $7-something for 5 qts.

Surfer - how funny, I just switched the Rodeo back to the Valvoline maxlife; had her on the Rotella synthetic 5w-40 previously.

I really like the Rotella, supposed to keep things real clean, but it's just too thick, I think.

My buddy in KS swears by the Maxlife. He won't touch the Valvoline synthetic, though (Synpower?). He said he's heard some negative stuff about it lately. Coincidentally, it was on sale at the Advance for $9 something for a gallon when I went to get oil this weekend. Almost tried it.
