Help please

Hi, I'm new here and in need of help. I have a 1999 ford ranger 4x4 that is giving me trouble. When I'm driving there is a rattle/ grating noise when I hit a bump or turn. There are some days that I don't hear it and then other days it doesn't go away. I think it is coming from the tire area, but am not sure if it is front or back. I just had the brakes done thinking that was the cause, but it's still there. What could it be?:banghead:

Because as you said it only occurs when you hit a bump or when you make a turn, it sounds like you have a suspension problem probably ball joints, otrsion bar (4WD), tie rod,etc. It would be best to get a front end mechanic check it out.

I'm with DonSor in that it sounds like a suspension problem, though the grating noise makes me think it could possibly be a bad wheel bearing. Does it happen in 2wd as well as 4wd? Does it continue after the bump for a ways or is it just during the bump? Is it worse when you turn the wheel or does it go away at certain points during the turn? Are the struts/springs in alright repair or do they need replacement? Have you tried to check the bearings by jacking the truck up and wiggling the wheels on both sides?

If the wheel moves excessively when you have your hands in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions (a little wiggle is okay), then you need to check your tie-rod ends. If the wheel moves when you have your hands in the 12 and 6 o'clock positions then the wheel bearing is probably bad. Either way, try spinning the tires and listening carefully for any grating sounds and feeling for any catches that could indicate a worn-out bearing.
