Transmission Problem

:eek: Today i was driving and while accelerating i heard a pop and a slight grinding noise from my tranny. I could still shift into all the drive gears but not in reverse. Is there any one that could help me with some advice and possibly fix this problem. Or do i need a whole new tranny? Please Help. Thanks. BurbanNute.:frown:

And, just to add... There will also be no 2nd and 4th gear also. Unless, its a 4L80E for some reason:)

Thanks much guys or gals for the advice. Should I go out and find a used one from the boneyards and or buy a rebuilt tranny? Which one way is better? I have no idea about trannys at all. Also, could a chev pickup truck/blazer with a 350 v8 and the same tranny work in my suburban? Does it have to be the same year as my burban?

Couple quick things for you to think about: The tranny that just went out in your truck, was "used" just like the one at the bone yard; All rebuilt transmissions are not the same. Don't even begin to think a $900-$1200 tranny is the same as a $2000-up transmission. Also, GM does have factory remanufactured trannys with a big warrenty on them. Or some one could go in and slam a reaction shell in it but I'm sure theres got to be valvebody problems also. They just haven't showed themselves yet :)
The tranny you pick depends on the money you got to spend or how much you like your truck.

I had the same problem about a year or a couple thousand miles ago and I used what I thougt was a reputable transmission shop, it's one of the big names. It cost me $2500 for them to rebuild it and I have had nothing but problems with it since. If I had to do it all over again, I would use the GM transmission with, what I understand, a 3 year warranty. Looking at some of the threads, the cost is about the same. After my second time back to the shop that I used, they told me that the second malfunction was caused by me, so they won't honor the warranty anymore. Normal driving won't break a just rebuilt transmission, but I live and learn. Hope you can find better service in your area.

My Suburban dropped reverse while I was driving home alone from OH to PA with my 2 young sons. Nothing like coming out of McD's to find that it has dropped reverse in Wheeling WV. (4 hours from home)

Right now I am saving up the $$ to get it fixed right the first time by my local reputable shop. (Who are also afforable and wont pee on me and tell me it is raining.)

I love my truck so I want to do it right not just go for the cheapest fix. I miss my truck though. (It has been 6 weeks since the issue.) :disappoin
