Oil Pump Replacement

I have a small leak in my oil pan. So, while I have that off would it be wise to replace the oil pump? I can get a high volume one at Autozone for $40. Can I just remove the old one and install the new one or do I need to remove the distributor or other things? I have 150k on the 5.7l now.One more question, can I replace the pan without removing the engine? Thanks in advance!

Yes you can just swap it out. I would strongly suggest getting the pick up tack welded to the pump.It just seems that after you swap out the pickup that's when they don't fit the same. Insurance. As for dropping tha pan I can not say for sure. I can't recall from memory and my estimator is not working right now. I can't see you having to pull the engine. Perhaps the motor mount's but that would be all.

I have a 90 GMC K1500 truck and was able to get the pan out with a cherry picker.

Remove both pins for the motor mounts, remove the fan shroud and the heater hose from the heater core to the intake. I also had to remove the oil cooler lines to get at some of the bolts of the pan.
