I have a 03 Corolla and the idle has started racing recently. Would this be the engine control module? if so how difficult is it to repair? thanks

Might be a dirty MAF sensor. Get some cleaner, clean it and make sure your air filter and box are in top condition at the same time.

Had a simialar issue happen on my 05 Vibe, which cleaning the MAF fixed it.

The car is at times racing. Just taking off for no reason. The accelerator is does not seem to be the problem. It has 61K miles and has been a great car so far.

The computer will increase the idle speed if it "thinks" the engine is overheating to circulate the coolant faster -- it will also do this if it detects the engine cooling fans are not operating.

You should also take a look at the throttle body and the idle solenoid that operates it -- it may be dirty or have some sort of obstruction preventing it from closing properly -- then check the routing of the throttle cable, and any other cables conected to the throttle shaft, look for kinks that may be causing it to bind. Make sure that the throttle operates freely -- WD40 helps.
