Water Pump question 2000 Windstar

My son-in-law and I are changing the water pump on his 2000 Windstar (3,8 litre). The new pump came with an o-ring for the bypass tube but I'm not sure whether it is supposed to go in the hole before the tube or go around the tube. The old pump appeared to have a shoulder in the tube that o-ring would stop at where the tube would bottom out. The new pump doesn't have a shoulder and the o-ring seems to drop right to the bottom and into the pump. On the other hand, putting the o-ring around the tube doesn't seem to work either because there isn't enough clearance between the inside of the hole and the tube wall.
Can anyone point us in the right direction?

I would compare the new pump that you have to yet another new one from the Ford dealer. Its possible that the pump you have was not manufactured correctly.

I've replaced my water pump with a Ford part ... I don't remember the o-ring detail that you are having a question about.

Mystery solved!

upon closer inspection we discovered that the bottom part of the tube had broken off right at the o-ring groove with the bottom 1/2 remaining in the old water pump.
Based on some of the other posts it appears as though it might be best that it broke now instead of springing a leak later on.
