OBD-II Scan Tool Communication Error

I just got a scan tool on ebay (ELM 327 based) that hooks to my laptop. I tested it on my 97 Aerostar, works great. But when I hook it to my 2000 Windstar all I get are communication errors. I have trouble getting it to establish a link to the vehicle and when I finally do it transmits a little bit of data for about 10 seconds then it drops out and gives me nothing but errors. Anyone have any experience or ideas on this.
Once again, it works fine on my 97 Aerostar.
Thanks.

I do not know the answer to the problem....I would check to make sure that the OBDII connector is clean, etc.....
There are several protocols used in the OBDII systems.....and it is possible that the Windstar uses a different protocal.
If the unit came with a manual, try reading under the setup information.
If it does not have a manual....or the manual does not go into the needed information.....try looking for a website for the product.
Also, you could try a search for a forum for the particular product that you have.

Hello
I would take take your van to a place that checks codes for free like AutoZone. See if their scanner works.

Dan
