Took my rear deck speakers out of my 1997 Grand Marquis today to replace with better sounding 6x9's and carefully took the wireharness off the speaker (to just resolder existing speakers to that harness and not cut original wires to the car).
Anyways most every speaker I have bought or taken out of a car has had a clear marking on them as to which was positive or negative, on the marquis here I can't tell!
The drivers side has 2 wires one grey w/bluestripe one light orange w/ yellow stripe, but both have stripes (usually to me a negative wire would have a stripe) so since both have stripes and the speakers and harnesses have ZERO markings I am lost on this one...

The passenger side has 2 wires one grey w/ purple stripe and one orange w/ a stripe (not in pic but it too is striped) as well (again making me question which is positive or negative).

The speaker and harness both show ZERO positive or negative markings of anykind.

Just wanna make sure when I wire these up that I do it properly so they are in phase and sounding their best but not sure which is positive and which is negative in this system.
Can anyone who knows this chime in? Got the car in pcs in the driveway right now backseat out etc, so wanna try to wrap it up by days end if possible.
Bill :)

BTW this is what I am doing
- I removed harness from stock speaker wanna solder wires to it to connect to my speaker without cutting stock wires on car
http://www.autoclinix.com/Mercury/SpeakCon.html
BUT even in this instructional page it doesn't clarify which is positive or negative on the harness or the speaker itself.

I did find a thing online explaining color codes for 96-97 crown vics that said white / pink was rear right + but I don't even have a white / pink wire on my marquis ;(
I found this via a google search
but am not 100% sure if it is accurate, and my car doesn't even have a pink/white wire.

So if I go by the 97 model info for crown vics it says i should have a white/pink wire that I don't even have (mine is very brown/pink), so that seems wrong, then if I go with info from 98 and up models it DOES identify a BROWN/PINK wire like I have, yet it shows the grey blue as being negative vs positive on the other info given for earlier models.
Guess I am just really confused, and wish between my Haynes manual (which is no help btw) and these things I am finding on google I am just becoming more confused as I go....

Right or wrong I went out started swapping wires around turned up music and this is what sounded the best so I left it as that.
I didn't even mess with the fronts so this was only the rears
Grey/light blue -
tan/yellow +
orange/red -
brown/pink +
and doing the fade and balance trial and error over and over that is what sounded even solid and in phase with each other, so regardless of the wirelayouts (none of which exactly shows same colors same year and sorta conflict each other) this was trial and error the best sound I could get out of them.
Now they have full rich sound with bass and mix well with the fronts so I am 99% sure they are correct just from swap this listen swap that listen etc etc.
