Hello,

I've just found a huge water leak underneat the carpet on the passenger side and the carpet and floor mat in front of the back seat are completely wet. It seems that the water is coming from underneat the car.

The car is kept in a garage, well maintenance at the dealer. I live in BC Canada...we get a lot of reain but it's the firt time that I have this kind of problem with a car.

I will appreciate any help that you can give me. Thanks a lot!

In my car, it was the fresh air intake under the cowling. The gasket wears out and debris get in and cloggs up the hole. When it rains or carwash the tank fills up and spills into the cabin area. What I did was take off the screen and took out what I could with my hand. Then I took a stiff wire and went roto rooter on it until the water ran out. No one sells the gasket and it's a special order from the dealer. You might try junk yard. What I did was replace the screen and sealed it with gasket in a tube. You just need to make sure you seal it completly or you will soon have the same problem. If you smell anti freeze, your heater core may be out.

Their should be a drip hose under the car to drain condensation from the heater core. Clean out this hose you made need a piece of wire. A leaking heater core is a common problem on these vehicles. A mechanic can r&r it in a day. If doing it yourself borrow or rent a vehicle until you are done.
I would suggest buying a years subscription from http://www.alldata.com/ they have good online manuals. You can get by with a chiltons but the time you save with a good manual is well worth $25.00. A lot cheaper than the Ford garage.
A heater core usually steams the windows. Pick a warm weekend.

I JUST had this problem and hopefully it's fixed. Standing water in the flooboard in front of the backseat on the driver's side. 2000 as well. Maybe I'm not alone here . . . ?

I took both pieces of the back seat out and noticed there was some rust. The top piece of carpet with the speaker covers also had water damage to it (there is a serial code or something that had been stained underneath). Anyway, I took the side piece of panel that goes over the seat belt off. When we ran a hose over it the water was dripping straight down from the corner where the back glass meets the body. Turns out rain water was running behind the plastic piece covering the seat belt spool and then down behind the seat and into the floor. I put silicone sealant in everywhere and when we took the hose back to it no water came through. Hopefully I'll stay dry now (crosses fingers).

Still leaking . . . :banghead:

Took the carpet out and it's coming from underneath the insulation against the firewall in the front. I can't pinpoint it past that, other than it's not coming from the top of the windshield like it was doing with the back glass.

Still only happens when it rains or when you take a water hose to it, so it's not the heater core.

Any suggestions?

Does it smell like radaitor coolant ? If yes, it is your unctured radiator returne hose under the intake manifold. It just happened to me. Cost $35 in part and 4 hours of hard work.
Good luck.

Nah, it's definitely plain water. Only happens when it rains or when I run water over it. Which sucks because I haven't been able to wash all this pollen off without flooding my car! Very troubling, but thanks for the reply.

My 2003 leaks water from time to time. There should be a gromet along the firwall underneath the dash on the passanger side. Sometimes they come loose. I can tell with mine when it sounds like there is an exhaust leak because the gromet comes loose and it's clost to the exhaust manifold. My gromet used to leak so bad that the whole front and rear passanger floor would get full of water.

Hope this helps

Ok, that sounds like the problem I have based on the amount of water you had. I have more time check into it now. Thanks.

On a warm day with the engine running and the AC on it should be dripping.
Their is a rubber tube about 4 inchs long hanging down they get plugged up and cause a lot of water in the car. Clean out this drain.

I'm going to check this on mine too. Where is this hose located? ( It did seem to come more from the bad rain, but worth a check)

You get wet moisture laden air when it is raining. The heater and evaporator core are in the unit. The air conditioning drips when it is hot. This drain goes from the back of the unit through the floor. With the vehicle on jack stands use a flashlight it is very obvious. I have even had to replace the hose before.

Well, I have to say. I removed the screen from the air intake and put a small amount of water down into the holding area to see if anything leaked out from below. - Almost nothing came out until I ran a wire down thru, and then all the water ran out fast, with chunks of stuff in it.

If this did back up, would it have come out of what apears to be a air duct under the passenger seat? in to the back floor? If so, thats where all my water was located. Under the passenger seat and back into the back floor area.

It rained..... NOT IT. pulled the front floor carpet up and it's water logged !! Probably going to need to have someone pull the seats and replace everything under them. That stinks!!!! :shakehead

Ok Everyone, listen up. I FOUND the leak after running the garden hose over the windshield passenger side. It is leaking off the firewall seal from under the vent/heater box inside the car. Look under the dash, up near the control arm for the vent box.(passenger side) The water was running out of the lower corner.

After some research from a local Ford Dealer. This IS a common problem with the Crown Vic's. Having it fixed this week. :grinyes:

Hello Folks, I have a 97 Crown Vic with the same problem. Mine also leaks on the drivers side. I also sealed up the fresh air intake and it didn't help.
I ended up tearing out the carpet and loosened the underlayment sound deadner off the firewall and had the wife start running water. Both leaks were found.

Drivers side was the grommet that seals the hood release cable that passes thru the firewall, it was cracked and split.

Passenger side was from the grommet that passes again thru the firewall for the large bundle of wires right under the heaterbox. This is a round gromet with a bunch of wires running thru it. Maybe 1.5-2 inches in diameter. I can't see any damage to the grommet other than maybe it had shrunk or wasn't spec'd right from the beginning and is too small for the hole it passes thru.

I hope this helps some folks as this has been an on-going pain in my ass for a year and I have to replace the carpet. I took some pics of folks are interested. I don't come to these boards except to find answers, so shoot me an email if you have questions. cougar6999@yahoo.com
