I wouldn't fool with it, just change it. I bought my part at a local independent parts store for $99, got the instructions on the Tauruscarclub.com site. Takes 2 to 3 hours if you take your time.
The old part doesn't seem to be seriously worn but does make a creaking noise when you spin the shaft.
I've heard you can get one as cheap as $40 from Rockauto.com.

I replaced my cam synchronizer with Rock auto part, was slightly oversized. I suggest you search for all postings for cam synch, there's plenty of advice. My part was easily sanded down to fit, your's might be OK. Mines has been running fine for 4 months. Part came with cam sensor and cam synch alignment tool for the $40. Once I got past the part fit, everything was fine.
When I got old part out, it was hard to turn by hand, bad bearings. If your holding in hand, you might as well replace it.
