4L60E No Reverse Bulletin

Has GM ever recalled this 4L60E for repair of the "No Reverse" issue? Through Net searching I found this problem has occured since day 1, 1994.

IF not are there enough customers to issue an ultimatum to GM to repair there trans free of charge, since this is a known OEM failure.

I'm amaized, all I did was make a normal left turn forward & the trans went out. :eek7:

Welcome to AF. The component responsible for those failures have been strengthened and updated around 2001, good article in the latest Hot Rod addressing this.

If you think you have lost the hub for the reaction sun shell, you can see exactly what's involved:

THANKS ALL:
Trans is rebuilt. Found the USUAL Sun gear stripped out. Luckily I didn't force it to get home otherwise there'd been more damage.

Just not sure why GM hasn't been sued big time for this, I've found that "high TENS of thousands" of customers have had this one part go out.:nono: It's little wonder why GM is having financial difficulties, I'm not interested in buying GM again... unless they can pay back this trans cost loss. Doubt it though.

Odd thing, I got a GM Warrentee Extention application... 3 days after the it had expired.:screwy: Heard GM does this also on a regular basis, they send the notice ON or the DAY before it's due, just to get the postmark validated. :headshake

Again thanks all. :p

That has been a failure point of the TH700-R4/4L60/4L60-E since the '80s. It has happened to tens of thousands, but compared to the ten of millions of those transmissions in use, the percentage is relatively small. The sad part is that it has been a known weak point for years and although maybe only a half of a percent of them fail that way, the numbers are high due to the market penetration.

If you think that's bad, check out the problems on some of the transmissions which HAVE been forced into recall or settlement, like the Chrysler "Golden Shaft" FWD automatics, or the Subaru, Mitsubishi, and Ford FMX transmissions for example.

The other known weak points are the 3-4 clutch, the input planetary, and the pump bushings which tend to take a lot of wear from the converter.

$108 is a bit high - you should be able to get this for around $60. It's made by SPX/Filtran, but marketed also by TCi. If you have a 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E or 4L65E, then it is most definitely a recommended upgrade part for all.

More like $44 a couple months ago. They are now made in China (that is not meant to be a joke - They are made in China).
