In Progress - F1-2001 9/11 tribute car. Ferrari 60th entry.

I have now started my first Ferrari 60th Anniversary tribute car, which ironically is a tribute car itself. I will be building the F1-2001 Italian Grand Prix car that ran at Monza on the weekend just after 9/11. The car was stripped of all sponsorship markings, except Ferrari on the nose and Bridgestone on the tires, and the nose was painted black.

There are 2 major differences from this car and the Tamiya kit, and they would be the front and rear wings.
Each wing in the kit is a 3 piece wing, this car only has 2.

For starters, I cut the upper wing off, and glued it to the back of the middle wing.

In this picture you can also see that the inside of the front endplates have 2 winglets that are not on the car, so they will be removed also.
Here, some putty work has started to eliminate the seam. I have shaped the top edge of the wing to closer match the 1:1, and the winglets have been removed. The nose has also been assembled and the seam removed.

I finished sanding the top as well, and primered the entire front wing. It needs some additional filler and sanding. Its very close though.
The next obvious exterior modification is the rear wing. Again, only 2 wings instead of 3. The parts that came in the kit will not work for the upper wing. But the top wing in the F310B kit is a pretty close match. I purchased a 1/2 built F310B kit on EBAY and it donated the upper wing as you see here. The position isn't quite right, but it will be when it's all assembled.
I started byfilling the grooves on the endplates with some putty and smoothed it out. I have it tacked in place with funtack for now. I will use some small brass rod to help hold it all together square and ease assembly after painting later.

That looks great so far. I love the look of the real car without all the logos and stuff.
I dunno if you've seen it, but someone else was working on this model as well, although it seems he never finished.. http://www.cifesystem.com/monza.html

I like your choice of which version to build a) unusual and different; b) no decals to stress over ;)

Thanks for the link. I found that site while researching this car and looking for reference photos. His step by step tutorial has really helped speed things along.

Thanks. It's funny you should mention stressing over the decals. Because I can't decide which car I will build, Schumi's or Barrichello's.

Schumi's, of course! :D
Great choice of subject, I'd like to build one myself but the modifications required to make it a low downforce version scare me. Best of luck, I'll be closely following your progress.

Great idea though in retrospect maybe you should add some "Big Oil" sponsor decals and a W oval on the taillight...
All kidding aside:disappoin I liked this car alot when it ran. Looking forward to progress.

Very nice start on this one!
Neat work on the front wing. I have one suggestion though...
...check the trailing edge of your modified flap. I think it should be cut out a bit more with a softer curve to better match the original.

Nice choice of version. I can only echo what others have said in that that lack of sponsors really allow your to see the lines of this glorious car. I guess that there are a lot of differences between the French and Italian GP cars given the downforce requirements at those circuits.
good luck,
Bill

Thanks. I think the rear edge of the front wing will get some additional shaping before final paint. I'm not 100% happy with it. Good eye!

I had a chance to get some work done on this project this weekend. I smoothed out many of the multi part pieces that I had previsously glued together, like the nose and inlets.
The parts fit together perfectly, so minimal putty is needed. The rear wing mods are complete, and it's ready for some additional primer on the other sides of the endplates, then paint and CF.

I did sand the trailing edge of the front wing as suggested, and like the new shape.
