My 2001 Windstar doesn't have the DPFE box that is shown in other models. Did they have them in 2001 or is mine missing? Help me please!

Someone else mentioned in here recently that they thought the DPFE was mounted on the passengers compartment side behind the intake. I was going to answer but didn't....
...but on my 2001 the DPFE is in front of the engine. Basically, line yourself up with the throttle body and move your eyes closer to the front of the van. If you see the EGR keep on moving....bam, right there. Little black box mounted on two tubes standing up off of an exhaust tube with an electrical connector to it.
That's the only place I'm aware of the DPFE being on 2001. Let us know what you find....

Hi
I have a friend with an '01 or '02 that I have looked at. It has a different DPFE as well. It is clearly visible on the front of the engine and sits atop the two tubes/hoses coming off of the EGR "supply" line. As I recall, it is about 11/2"X2" rectangular with an electrical connection. Is very flat in shape and as you say looks nothing like the "regular" DPFE's. I would try to get the Ford part number off of it and then run it on y2kford.com to check a price.

it is like the others say, right on top of the engine a flat box shaped item. if yours is silver in color like the photo below (hilighted in green) it is the old one that will probably need changing. If your DPFE is a black plastic one, it is the new upgraded one and should be ok from what i understand. On my 2000 windstar I have the old one but has'nt given me any problems yet. Hope this helps.

Mine is not in the place highlighted in green. There are 2 threaded holes in the plastic intake where it should be, but no box.

First, is if for sure the 3.8L engine?
2nd, locate the EGR valve.
There will be a metal pipe connected to it that will go to one of the exhaust manifolds, all that I am familiar with would be the FRONT exhaust manifold.
On this pipe, there should be 2 small'ish hoses that come off and go to the DPFE.
Follow these hoses.
HOPEFULLY you have not bought a vehicle that someone thought that they would be smart and remove emission control stuff......
That just does not work on modern vehicles with all the sensors and monitoring, as that information is used for engine control.

I'm on my 4th DPFE in less than 3yrs. I tried 2 aftermarkets from Autozone (black plastic type) and they both failed in less than a year. I finally went with Ford part (black plastic) from ebay for more than half the cost of dealer. If this one fails, I have got to look at some other cause. I just checked ebay, and there are a couple available. http://cgi.ebay.com/Ford-DPFE-sensor-F77Z9J460AB-Brand-New_W0QQitemZ170085977517QQihZ007QQcategoryZ33607Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I believe that part # f77z9j460ab will work for your '01- check it with the dealer and also check out prices at Rockauto.com and TeamFord parts online. I have had the best luck and prices through ebay, but I would stay away from a used sensor. Good luck.

If you have the 01 windstar, it should have the 3.8L engine because from what I understand the 3.0L was discontinued after the year 2000. Also, do you have your check engine light on? If you do then it must be due to the missing DPFE.

Did you buy the van new? If so did you ever remoeve the DPFE? Did you ever take it to a mechanic that may have removed it? I find it odd that you are missing this but it does sound like you described the mounting holes where it should be.
The light should have been on all the time this thing was missing.

Hi Again
As I recall, my friend's van had the mount points for the "conventional" dpfe up along the upper intake. The "alternate" style of dpfe that I posted the picture link for, sits much lower in the engine compartment. Standing at the middle front it is slightly to your right of center and around 12-15" below hood latch level. You will be looking down onto the flat top of the unit. It sits on top of the two input tubes.
Good luck

2001 - Windstar P0401 error Mil light was on for two years. Never noticed any problems.
Ohio E-Check Result - P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
First I want to thank each and every member that posted to this Forum.
You saved this 67 year old man, who didn't know one thing about any vehicle manufactuered after 1989, several hundred dollars.
You told me what to replace (DPFE Sensor), described the exact location (Mine was just look down), and how to replace it (Just wiggle and rock it, while pulling up.
I'm the second owner of this vehicle. I had the black sensor, which means, from the posts I read on this site, it was replaced once before. However, a member stated that the early replacement sensors, were as bad as the original.
Because of all you members, I was able to repair my car for $29.02. I didn't even need a tool, but I sure did need this Forum and all you members.
I think you know the prices the Ford Dealers and auto repair shops, were quoting me. WOW!!
I was lucky to find this part new, at a huge parts distribution warehouse here in Cleveland, Oh, for $26.99 plus tax.
After the problem was fixed and the light was out, E-Check said I have to drive it a few days or have a garage set the OBD to Ready. Best price I got was $100 plus tax. So, Iwent back to Google, to find the OBD Ready, driving procedure and, believe it or not, I pulled up the exact Ford Motor Co TSB, that deals with this problem (DTC's) P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401), that they sent to all thier dealers. It lists all the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models and years that had this problem. Also has a great blow-up picture of the part and it's location.
Just click on, or copy/paste the link below.

Also pulled up a site that lists every TBS and Recall that the Auto Manufacturer ever issued on your vehicle make and model.
Just click on, or copy/paste the link below.

One more thing, if anyone wants the 2001 Ford Windstar, OBD Ready driving procedure, let me know. I'll post it.
Once again, Thank You, Thank You, ThankYou!!

I also have a 2001 Windstar lx 3.8L and the DPFE is not located on the from right side. I traced the wire from the egr and it leads to the backside towards the middle of the upper intake manifold. I will remove the cowl tomorrow and try to locate it and give this thread an update.:banghead:
