Fuel gage gone psycho

The fuel gage reads full until it reaches about 1/8th of a tank then drops down and bounces from empty to 1/8th reading. Ideas?

Sounds like the sender in the tank has given out. I use the trip odometer in place of a fuel guage in my car. Every two hundred miles I stop and fill up.

The "Solution" to the problem is to replace the sending unit with the high-pressure pump. It's $120 off the shelf, new. Then you have to deal with taking the tank off, and replacing the unit. (And all that that implies; in other words, it's worth paying someone else to deal with the headache.)

Alternately, you can take the tank off and unit/pump out, and replace the float, only.

You can use the odometer to count your mileage, and wait for the pump to give out, as well. You can only purchase the unit with the pump, and it seems kinda silly to replace a pump that's working. I bought a Bronco with a working unit/pump for $125.
