engine stops when turning...

:screwy: Hi all,
Got a problem with my 90’ 6.2L diesel suburban..
First of all, my fuel gauge is stuck in “full” position since 3 weeks, the gauge just starts going down when the diesel tank is half empty and it’s then shaking all the time, I think the sending unit is the problem so I’m about changing it in the next days.
Yesterday I went skiing, just before the resort I had to turn on a circle (3/4 or the circle turning left then a right turn to go out of the circle on a little hill). Just after I went out of the circle the engine stopped the same way as if it was out of fuel. After trying to start the engine 2-3 time it started again.
The engine was not cold (I ran about 100km before being there) and the diesel tank was almost full.
This problem happened already last week at exactly the same place but as the gauge is dead and I was not sure about the fuel level I thought it was because I took the turn too fast with not enough fuel in the tank.
Do you think the sending unit can be the cause of that or do I have to check something else?
One thing I’m wondering about that : Is the diesel outlet following the sensor in the fuel tank or is it just in the bottom of the tank ? (I’m French so I’m not sure about the word I used, I hope you’ll understand anyway)
Thanks a lot
Ben

The fuel level sensor is one part in the tank that changes electrical resistance according to the fuel level and float position to send the message to the gauge in the dash. The fuel pick-up tube goes through the same sending unit flange to the bottom of the tank for convenience. The fuel contamination sensor is also in the tank attached to the sender assembly... I believe. Do you see any wires that connect at the fuel filters? If you have dual fuel tanks, you could have a problem at the solenoid valve that controls which tank the fuel will flow from as well as which fuel gauge sender connects to the gauge. The solenoid valve switches fuel flow and sender signals at the same time.
Check each battery cable connection at the batteries to see that they are clean and will tighten.

My suburban has only one tank (and it's better for my wallet when I fill it)
I checked the battery, all is allright, nothing suspect on the fuel filter also.. tomorrow I go to fix the sending unit, I'll tell the mechanic to have a look at it..
Thanks

Hi All,
I went with my truck to the garage to change the sending unit and I got some questions now.
I had some problems of understanding with the mechanic, he thought I had a problem with the part of the sending unit which take the fuel out so he just removed the sending unit and send it to a place to be sealed again (that’s what I understood). So the gauge is still not working, of course ! Now I have to buy a new sending unit to replace mine and the garage will install it.
I found some sending units for 100 US$ in some US stores and for 200 CAD$ here in Montreal. The garage called GM and they’re asking more than 500 CAD$ for the part !!!
The mechanics told me the problem is that the sending units I found are with 3 outlets and the one I have on my truck is a 2 outlets and can only be found at GM. I never heard about sending units for diesel with 2 outlets so can someone help me with that ?
Just to remember, my truck is a 90’s Chevrolet Suburban, 6.2L diesel, V1500, with a 40 gallons tank.
What’s the difference between a 3 outlets and a 2 outlets ? Is it possible just to take the electrical part from the 3 outlets and put it on my 2 outlets sending unit ?
Sorry to ask so many questions but I’m really angry as the part is almost half the price of my truck… and this mechanic doesn’t make me confident…
Thanks a lot guys, I hope someone will be able to help me. :banghead:
