my 17yo son wrecked his 94 sl1. he was hot rodding on the back roads and hit something immovable. Im not positive what he hit. He damaged the part that is covered with styrafoam under the bumper. when the foam was taken off the aluminum underneath was cracked badly where he hit and needs to be replaced. What is this part called?? Do you need a special tool to remove it? we took some nuts off of bolts where it looks like it connects but it doesn't seem the least bit loose, not even whe pried on. Any ideas? also, apparently the hood came open on his way home and smashed the windshield. How hard is it to replace the windshield? He has found one at a parts yard for 100 bucks which is 200 cheaper than having someone do it. I will help him fix this but he has to pay for everything as I didnt wreck it and im not paying. he only needs the car for a few more months as he goes into the Navy 7/10/07. Any help is greatly appreciated..thanks

I'm not sure what part you're talking about under the bumper but as far as the windshield goes, have someone who knows what they are doing replace it. These are tricky and you might just end up buying it more than once and spending what it would have cost just to have a pro do it.

The Black Book Used Parts Guide indcates it is called:

Impact Bar Part # 2109 5120

That part is usually welded on. You will probably have to drill the welds out. If you only need the car for a short time you might just leave this part alone if there is no frame damage. Just get the window fixed. Unlesss the car will be used on the road alot (for safety)

the part you are talking about is called an absorber, and the aluminum part a reinforcement. The absorber is behind the bumper cover, and the reinforcement is behind that.

a picture of parts for fun.

the metal bar behind the styrafoam has 6 bolts on the backside, 3 on each side and 3 underneth, not welded in this case. if everything is loose and the thing won't come loose it may simply be wedged in place.

near chicago? need some parts shown above? PM me.
