Does anyone on here actually own an XJ220? My dream is to own one someday.

Are you insane?? :p
How much does an XJ220 cost?
isnt it $1 million?
how many XJ220 are there in the whole world?
and how many of those owners do you think like to chat on the web?
and how many of those handful {if any} owners know about AF when it's only 2 or 3 months old?
:D
the chances of XJ220 owner lurking this board are pretty slim as you can see :)

You never know where you might run into an XJ220 owner. True, they're a limited production car and they cost a fortune, but I've talked to a few XJ220 owners online in the past.

Chris
03-06-2001, 09:07 AM
Uh, they are quite a bit less than a million.
Jaguar originally asked 800 000, but they didn't sell well.
THERE ARE STILL SOME BRAND-NEW ONES, NEVER BEEN DRIVEN, FOR SALE!!!!!! They cost about 250 grand. They didn't sell because the economy went to the dogs, and few people could afford them. I think they made 250-350 of them.
Nice car, really advanced, but a V6, honestly. (yes I know its a marvel, but for 800000,no thanks. For a quarter million, its looking alot better)
No, I don't own one.

I would LOVE to own one . . . does that count?

Chris
05-10-2001, 06:03 PM
No, it doesn't REALLY count, but, yah know, hea.
Mike Tyson bought his new, and you saw it in DUB, a mag for (usually) customized cars. Tysons car wasn't going to be on the cover, so he got his Jag, adn they put it on! In the states, only him and Bill Gates have one. :(

Chris

I'm pretty sure Bill is the richest in the world currently, but hes not as rich as he used to be.
Adam, what are you talking about? I too would like to talk to a Zonda owner (must be a real conneseur {spelt that wrong, for sure})

where would you go about buying a new one for 250K??

Chris
05-25-2001, 08:30 PM
Just inquire to Jaguar, the company. Say you want to buy a XJ220, and you can take delivery immediately, and arrange a meeting. Why, do you have a quarter mil lying around?? If so, I'll take 50 grand please. Please? Please??

There just wasn't a market (economy went to the shits), and now people have lost interest, and a quarter mil is great for this car.

I heard that the son of Sam Walton (founder of Wal-Mart) has surpassed Bill Gates as the worlds wealthiest man....I read it on the internet, so it must be true:rolleyes:

The poor XJ220.

When the XJ220 was concieved, is was expected to carry a super-tuned version of the Jag V12, but the weight penalty would have been too much. So, Jaguar followed Ferrari's lead in using a smaller, race-derived engine running at high boost. (But Jag used a V6 instead of a V8, like Ferrari.) While the choice of a smaller engine was justfied for the design goals of the car, it just didn't have the glamour of the V12. After all, "real" supercars have V12 engines.

The "220" was supposed to be a promise of its top speed, but its speeds of 212-213 with emissions equipment, and speeds of 217-218 mph with the catalytic converters removed, somehow were less impressive when compared to the 220 target.

And then, as Chris already mentioned, the economy went down the crapper. Many of the potential buyers were actually speculators, hoping to re-sell the cars at a profit. But when the real buyers started to back out, Jaguar had a hard time finding anyone to take their car.

And to top it all off, about the same time the McLaren F1 was released. Faster, fancier and more expensive, the XJ220 was doomed.

Poor thing. We should all try to find one a good home. :silly2:

currently the owner of the Wal-Mart chain is the richest man in the world

Chris
05-26-2001, 04:04 PM
Stupid Wal-Mart. Stupid multi-billionaires. At one time, Bill Gates could have sent every high school graduate to college for 4 years. That is a lot of money.
To spite them all: Everyone in the world gives me $50 bucks, taken from your taxes. Then I will be richest. HA HA HA (said in an evil voice)

I'm positive that in the US only Mike Tyson and Bill Gates own one. They were never exported here, so it wakes quite a bit of work to get one.

I'm not sure the last time that this was posted but, There's an XJ220 for sale in this forum supposedly and the Dupont Registry has had at least 10 for sale, 7 of Which were for sale overseas however there was an XJ220S and an XJ220 for sale within the US. They usually run for about 265K now. Jaguar lost lots in that whole thing also.

I dont know who it is but there is a guy that lives in Terre Haute Indiana that recently bought a BR Green one. I remember reading it in the news letter to the Briitish Auto Owners association.

The reason why there arent many here is because they do not meet US Requirements. You have to get specile permission from everyone favorite uncle to own one. The US will allow a certain select of low production cars to be exported under what is called the "right to show lisence. It takes alot of redtape and paperwork to get the permission. They only allow a few exotic cars JagXj220 is one and I believe you have to do the same thing to get a McClaren F1 over here. For 250 G's it is more trouble than it is worth when you can buy several domestic supercars that look like Mclarens for arround 150,000. Like the Ulima Gtr and the Mosler which both are powered by suped up LS-1's. And then theres the Salleen.

I heard about show and display. You can only drive 2500 miles a year, though. They use that to get Bugatti EB110's over, for about $500000.
But no one3 ever drives a car like that 2500 miles a year.

Hi there all, Yeah My brother in Law who happens to be absolutely mad about Jaguars has bought serial number 003 from the factory, it was a race spec works car that he has broken up, and rebuilt but with the original V12 config engine, the thing is that when that idiot Tom built the car with the V6 Turbo he left very little ectra room so we've had to lenghen the car by 11 inches ( yeah I know its huge already) I'll upload some work in progress pictures soon.

The car should be completed 3rd qtr this year, I'll keep you all informed as to it's progress.

Well, if you sold your Lotus, I would say getting a decent XJ220 would be a good idea. They are fairly reliable for exotics, they are VERY fast, and they are luxurious.
I would say go for it, if you are so inclined....

I discovered Pagani Zonda yesterday. I was walking down ther street and I just saw this very interesting exhaust, so I went in to investigate. I love the interior, and the feel of it is very nice; The man who owned it walked out of the post office so I asked him about it. He said that because it is made completly out of carbon fibre it is very light, and with a 7 litre engine he goes very fast in it... the guy was only about 35! I love that car though, it is one of the highlights of that day.

Chris
01-18-2003, 03:48 PM
Well, I to would chose a Pagani Zonda, but they are significantly more money. But, if I were buying a new supercar in the 250K+ range, I would pick the Zonda. They are VERY fast, and very luxurious, aswell. And they are the most beautiful modern car, IMO.

There really are a lot of us since 8/15/99 "show & display" law that allows legal use of car. Price has come way down with last 5-6 sold in US about 100 - $200K. It's a fantastic trip to the grocery store! As far as I know, no more "new" cars have been at Grange for quite some time though there are some very "low" mile cars for sale for the right price. Mine has under 6000 Km.

Swoxy,
Sounds like you and your family have the Jaguar bug.I still have my early E-types when I was about your age (maybe a little older ;-)
The XJ220 is an extraordinary car, but quite honestly, the '74 E-type OTS is more fun (and more practical). Some of my friends bought the 220 as an investment and lost several $100K when market went soft. I made the same promise you did when Jag sports first talked about the XJ220 (it was supposed to be a 12 cylinder, 4 wheel drive) and waited 8 years. Good liuck.

Quite honestly, I have more FUN with my '74 E-type OTS ;-)
Much of what has been written in this thread is true, but:
AFAIK, there are NO more new ones available (the last 20 were shipped from UK ~2001. Most of these owners still keep in touch though some have sold their INVESTMENT. Mine was purchased for the love of the marque after almost investing in the original under Jag Sport 1990 when 50 "supercars" - V12, 4-wheel drive, carbon fiber, vertical doors, etc were to be produced and people lined up with $250K deposits for this $1M chance. It could NOT be produced (weight reasons among others) and Jag got sued -- and WON. When the laws changed in US (show & display) 8/99 many new cars sitting at Grange were shipped and passed ALL US tests. Autoweek ran cover story of "guy in Muncie IN" re these cars (IMHO -- excellent story and true). Last few cars (used ) have resold for between $120K - 240K. Still some used ones out there for sale. McLaren boasted of being FASTER. My car is certified at 220 MPH (0-100 KPH under 3.5 sec with hp well exceeding 560 as described in brouchures). I do get 25 MPG when laying off the turbos.

That was the good -- the bad: NO visibility; aluminum body; in spite of being cut down in size from the original 12 cylinder, it feels quite BIG.

The ugly -- NONE!

benkc
06-21-2003, 12:26 PM
First, it is a comfortable car (quiet on inside, seats bolstered, great A/C) but there's always someone gawking or reaching over the aluminum body when I park. Second, MPG ~15-20) in city is very good but visibility sucks.

I do drive it to pick up kids and on the hilly roads but as I wrote, roadster is more fun.

There were only 20 new ones imported after laws changed 3 years ago and possibly only twice that used in entire US. One does not see them coming and going.

Rather than pay $250K+ for one already in the US, how difficult and costly would it be to import an XJ220 and make it smog compliant? Also, since I live in Calif, it may be even tougher. I'm assuming it would come under the Show & Display exemption for pre-1996 cars, so only the smog changes would be required.

I am shooting for under $200,000 total costs, if that is feasible. Is this unrealistic? Or perhaps prices will come down and I need only wait.
