Pennsylvania - looking for volunteers for hill climb races

Believe it or not, there are places where it is completely legal ... even encouraged ... for people to race on roads in the U.S. It's through the SCCA's hillclimb races and volunteering to help work is an awesome way to get up close to the real action ... check it out.

One of the things that the hillclimbs always needs is volunteer workers.
The PHA (Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association) is looking for volunteers for the 2007 race schedule.

They need people that can do Tech, work corners, flag, starting line, turn around, etc. In general all that is required is showing up on time, friendly attitude, willingness to learn.

Corner workers don't need to be an SCCA member, although I would encourage it. Especially since it is possible to get a trial membership which is free. One of the benefits of membership is better insurance benefits in the event of the unforseen.

Hours vary. Corner workers generally meet at 8 or 8:30 and are done by 5. Start line is similar. Tech is more of a Friday night and Saturday morning job. Working one day is fine.

Some events offer worker goodie bags, or worker raffle prizes. For corner workers every event offers the best seat in the house as close as you can get to the action. And of course free lunch and free entry to the Saturday night party. They also gave a free seat at the awards banquet.

That's a lot more than you would get for working at an autocross and chances are good that you would be sitting in the shade :) You also do not have to run to pick up any cones ... of course, if someone truly goes "off" you might be helping a driver out of tree and moving around a wrecked race car. As I said above, you will be CLOSE to the action. the best seats in the house ;)

If anyone is interested in working any of the events this year,
please e-mail Tom Knorr at: tknorr@enter.net

Have the subject line read: "hill climb volunteer"
and please tell him that Jeff Fazio sent you.

All you have to do is send him your contact info and which hills you might be interested in working.
