I decided to not mess with the CODE on this radio and just get an aftermarket Kenwood..

Situation is that I dont want to spend $30.00 bucks for a Harness Kit and then another $12.00 for an Antenna Adapter so I decided to figure out which wire is which.. the one inside the dash radio plug has multiple colored wires of which i dont know what is what since I dont have a Repair Manual.

Well I managed to take a digital pic of both the block inside the dash and also one of the block behind the radio.. (Hence I butchered the stock radio rear to remove this piece)

My questions is if anyone knows a link to the wire schematic and the colored wires. I'm not cheap to have to buy a repair service manual ; its just simply that I am unemployed and can't afford one at $75.00 on ebay

Here are the pics that I photoshopped to display the numerals on both wire blocks the one behind the stock factory radio and the one attached to the harness inside the Dash.

Yes E38, but look and you will see E32 listed and click on that and then scroll down until; you find the wiring diagrams (pdf) for your year.

This is the website you need to pull a schematic of yur cars stereo or any electrical system. the PDF file takes a bit of time to load, but it is there, straight from the BMW ETM.

I searched incessantly last night on that site address and I still could not find the schematic or diagrams of the actual wires and what their colors are. It just doesnt have it. It simply gives a general outline as to the differences or comparatives between U.S. and European terminology.

Like for instance: Wire Colors

English.............. DIN (German)
Black..................Sw
Blue....................Bl
Brown..................Br
And so on and so on....

I need the complete cluster page of the complete wire harness from headlights to tail lights... There should be a page that shows just interior electronic components such as Radio, Instrument Cluster, even a Hazard Switch .. like what the yellow wire with red dot means... or green wire with white stripe...

I am trying to figure out which ones are my right speaker from my left speaker and so on..

With a test light I was able to find out that:

Position #5 is +12V Switchable (Ignition)
Position #9 is +12V Constant

Hit your nearest future shop or best buy and see if they have a wiring harness for your car. If they do, look on the back and they usually have a list of the wires and their functions. Don't buy it, take a note pad with ya :D

You can also get out your continuity testor and figure out all the switched, grounds, constants, illumination, and speaker wires...though doing the speakers would require you to test the end in the dash and the positive and negative terminals on the speakers.

When you test the illumination, make sure your dash lights are on and the dimmer is set to a low (dim) setting. You might read less than 8volts on the illumination.

Good one. Crutchfield says the harness is free with purchase of a reciever:

Or you could go that route as well. All of the instructions are included with that and they even have vehicle specific installation instructions. Be careful though, if you have the DIN style mounting, you won't need any special mounting kits. You might need antenna adaptors, but I'm not sure on the North American spec E38's. My Jap spec E32 didn't need an adaptor with my aftermarket Alpine deck, so your's might not. But check this before hand.

Post pics of the before and afters! Let us know how it looks!
