Could anyone tell me specifically how to remove the door panel on drivers door? I can get it loose except for the inner door handle area. I can't see what else to remove to get it loose.
Thanks.

I also need to know how to get the door panel off to replace a broken outside door handle. Can anyone help?

Possibly you got your problem resolved but if not....From what I can remember when I repaired a broken inside handle. Remove screws on arm rest. Then remove the triangle cover where the mirror is. I think it pushes up and out. Remove the plastic cover behind the handle. I believe it's held on by plastic clips behind it. Use a small screwdriver and slide around it to find the tabs. Now the tricky part if the former wasn't hard enough. You need to find the little plastic clips between the panel and door. Best to use a small screwdriver and slide between the panel and door. It took me awhile to get it started and find one. The first is the hardest. Actually I broke a few off in the process. The panel is meant to push up and away to remove. I ended up using a rubber mallet to try to pound it up. Then when you finally remove it, you have to disconnect the power connections. There's no easy way to tell you how to do it. They snap together but easier said then done. Once you get that far you'll see what I'm talking about. Oh, there's a plastic cover inside the panel taped to the door. Save it to reuse. I used masking tape to put it back on. Putting it back together was much easier. Not easy but easier. Stay with it and you can do it. Or bite the bullet and pay big to get it done. I'm cheap and like a challenge. Good luck.

If you haven't purchased a new handle yet, you'll see when you do that the new handle comes in a complete package. What I mean is that what is riveted now will be rivited all together new. Just take the old out and replace with new. I think it's held in by one or two screws top and bottom. And then behind the handle there are two rods. One going to the lock and the other going to the door latch. These rods pop in to the back of the handle. The only place I found to buy the handle was at the dealer. I think about $35 or 40. However you may be able to find it cheaper on ebay. I needed it ASAP though so had to go through the dealer. Anyway when you buy the new one you'll see what I'm trying to describe. It's much easier than it sounds. I had this exact same question before I saw the new handle.

well, actually, the original is riveted to the door. so all i did was take the new unit (which had no hardware to attach to the door) to an auto parts store and they hooked me up w/ a small bolt and nut w/ lock washer. had to drill out the rivet and then slightly drill out the hole (in the door) and it fit like a CHARM!

Good, glad you got it fixed.

For lack of a 1997 Suburban door forum... :-) Autozone had some pretty good instructions that came through about 1995 but couldn't find my own year. Suddenly, my inside drivers door handle won't open the door and I have to roll down the drivers window and let myself out using the external door handle. Probably some broken plastic #$@%& but not sure. Does anyone know if the inside door panel has to come off for something like this? I'm assuming no shortcuts and that it does which leads me to next question - anyone had a 1997 door panel off? TIA

Well I assume the 97 fix would be the same as my 99. Read my previous post on this issue. Time consuming but you can do it. If I can you can. You may be able to find the part on ebay, otherwise will have to get it at the dealer.
