I can't start my 98 Taurus with the key, but the remote start works fine. The ignition turns, but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Thanks!

We need more information Annie. When was the remote start installed? Do you have a factory alarm? Does it crank with the key? Did this happen suddenly? Were the keys dropped, or did they get wet? Have you tried a second key?

I know where MyTaurus8AChevy is going with this. It certainly sounds related to the PATS system. I'll add a question, did the key you are using ever start the car?

Thanks for all of the replies..... The keys (both sets) worked fine up until yesterday. It's a coincidence that I just had new front and rear brakes installed this past Saturday. The problem seems to have started shortly after- I checked with my mechanic and he claims there would be no connection between the two...

My remote start was installed about 5 years ago- I have no alarm.

Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!!!!!!

OK well you can rule out having a bad Securlock. That pretty much leaves something being wrong with your remote start module, the ignition switch, or wiring going from it (which they would have cut when they installed the remote start). If they used crimps (which most shops do) then one of the connections could be bad. This is why I always solder all connections. What brand/model number remote start is it? You should be able to unplug it and simply jumper two connections to test if the module is bad. The good news is that you can rule out anything that comes after the remote start. That pretty much leaves wiring, ignition switch or a bad connection :)

I decided to take my car to the dealer to have this checked. I was just afraid that I would get stuck some day if my remote start decided not to work. So, the end result was a broken piece of plastic from the cylinder which was causing the ignition to not start. They installed a new lock cylinder and all is well~

I just want to thank all of you that replied to my post. This forum is the best!!
