I saw a news article recently where a kid approached an officer in one of the vans and while he was talking to him, two of his buddies pulled the lisence plate off the back of the van. They then put the plate on their car and sped past the van at something like 20 over the limit. 17 times. So the van issued itself 17 times.

That's an urban legend about 10 years old by now.

I could have sworn I heard somebody here on AF say they did that. Oh well, funny as well if it actually happened.

its been a while, but if i remember right.... the Denver, Co area ended up having to post signs where photo radar vans will be monitoring. your profile says you're in Miami so this doesn't help much

There was an article a month or so ago about how these vans were going to be introduced to the chicago area. They are supposedly going to be mainly used on the freeway. I haven't seen one yet, but I doubt I would notice if I did. They are supposed to be completely unmarked vans where the radar gun points out the rear window and there is a camera in the windshield to take the pic of your license plat if you're caught speeding.
But this reminds me of the traffic light cameras that take the pic of your LP if you run a light. According to a somewhat reliable source of mine, these camera-issued tickets were outlawed in Minnesota because they can't prove that it was you driving your car and not someone who stole it or borrowed it. So why should you have to pay the ticket and have your insurance go up if you weren't driving?

if you're speed is within the limit you won't get in trouble.

Scottsdale AZ is the leader who began taking pictures and sending mail. Currently the two freeway speed cams have covers on them until their future is determined at the next voting poll. During the 10 mos or so that the freeway cams were operating, one guy had his picture taken about 30 times over a few weeks and some others have checked in at over 130 MPH. Some of the photos should still be viewable in online news articles. There are still photo vans and SUV's snapping pictures on city streets.

There are some reflective lic plate covers available that work at least at some angles. Laws against them too. Probably just an equipment violation. There are lots of covers that don't get tickets or removed.

my friend used to live is Prescott, AZ. I guess they had a speed camera on the highway there. He said that it would catch unless you went over 85 mph. Otherwise the shutter speed was too slow or something like that and would blur the license plates.
