Hello,
I just aquired a Florida 92 Mercury Grand Marquis and 70 year old guy bought new. Body, interior is mint, transmission rebuilt. He blew the engine, (head gaskets/possible heads cracked) and I was looking for a used engine, however, it seems they only made that engine for two years. I have talked to several mechanics that dont want to rebuild the engine. A friend owns a junk yard, so I can get a used engine/transmission for cheap. I would like a better engine and can get a ford 5.0 for cheap. What engine is possible to fit in this car other than stock V8? Does anyone know of someone in Ft lauderdale or Miami Florida area that is capapble of doing a engine swap? About how much am I looking at for labor?
Thank you,
Nathan

Hi - check out www.crownvic.net for more specific info.

What part of the engine is blown? If it's just a head gasket - they're easy to fix. And, even if the heads are screwed, pick up a set of 'PI' heads, from any 99 and newer 4.6L.

I know what you mean by '2 years only' - Ford used the AOD in the the Vic for the first 1/2 of 1992. Seems like you've got one of them too, eh?

Well, you could also look for 90-91.5 TownCar engines as well.

Or, to use a 92.5 and newer block, you HAVE to change the tranny too, to the newer electronic AOD, or 4R70W unit. You could always sell the rebuilt AOD that's currently in it.

How much did you pay for the car?

Hi nnate1228@aol.com:

I just purchased from my elderly nighbor a '92 Grand Marquis with 110 thousand miles on it. It has a 4.6 liter engine and it rides like new. I recently drove it from California to Florida and back without any problems. However, it used a quart of oil every one thousand miles or so. I know of others that have Grand Marquis and Crown Victorias with 4.6 engines and they also use about a quart of oil every
thousand miles or so.

To my knowledge, 5.0 engines ended in 1990 in Town Cars and in 1991 in Grand Marquis.

Good luck and best wishes.

You should have a 4.6L engine. About any 4.6L engine should bolt up. You mayu need to change the sensors and maybe a few brackets, but that is about all. For sure the 92 to 95 is the same. In 96 they went to the composite intake and repositioned the EGR system. A little work and modification will make it fit fairly easily.

92 gets the best of a lot a engine swaps nightmares. First you need to know what 4.6 engine you have. The AOD bell housing is totally different (same bolt pattern as the 302/351 engines) then the later 92 AODE bell housing. Simply check your gear shifter for an overdrive button, if it has one then its AODE and you can painlessly swap a crown vic. Grand marquis engine from 2/19/92 to 94. If there is no overdrive button you have an AOD and you’ll need a 4.6 engine from a 92 crown vic, grand marquis made no later then 2/18/92 or 91-92 town car made before 10/91.
