1998 GMC 1500 4wd transmission shifts hard

Hello,
The transmission on my Suburban just started shifting hard. It almost feels like it starts slipping a bit between gears and then catches hard. I checked the fluid and it is fine, but I noticed the serpentine belt is in very bad shape and looks like it has started disintegrating. It there any connection between the belt going bad and the transmission slipping, or do I have worse problems. The truck has 118,000 miles on it, and I have had the transmission fluid/filter changed several time. I have also had the rear differential serviced a few times. We do tow a light trailer with it, but I have only towed the trailer 30 miles during the last year and a half.

do you have a K/N air filter in it? That will mess up things and make your truck act like it has tranny problems...just had that problem ourselves. $15 dollar air filter fixed it. There is a TSB out about it, my mechanic gave me the advice. Otherwise, you probably have tranny trouble.
