STOP letting R134a out into the air!!

To all you who think it's ok to let 134a out into the atmosphere. Remember, people once thought R12 was safe, too.. Let someone who's certified and has a recovery machine do it...sheesh

:iagree:
I heard a rumor that 134a was just as destructive to the ozone as R12. I heard it in a Benz training course so I can't post a link but it's something to think about. Always recover and recycle!!!

Uhhhh.... Sorry? :dunno:
You maybe wanna tell us what 134a is? Sounds like some form of giant rotary engine

Air conditioning refrigerant. R12 was used for a long time before someone found out it destroyed the ozone layer. That's when they developed R134a...which is now sold over the counter. Lots of people think it's harmless to release into the atmosphere but new findings are saying otherwise.

So is this what we commonly call freon or something different?
blindside.AMG
08-04-2006, 12:33 AM
Kind of. People often refer to all refrigerant as "freon" because freon is related to refrigerators and the early stages of air conditioning. But freon contains CFC's which have been fazed out...as you probably know. Now you have R134a which doesn't contain CFC's but still may harm the ozone.

I still have a can of R12 sitting in my basement. 2 pounds. I think im gonna go puncture it now, and dance around in glee.
That or sell it to someone who really REALLY wants R12. I think i can fetch 200 bucks for it.

What about demolition derbies or when junked cars get crushed? No one is recovering the refrigerant out of these beaters. Basically almost all the refrigerant ever made will end up in our atmosphere. Not a good thing that's for sure. :disappoin

From what I understand the dies and such used to detect and fix leaks is worse then the refridgerants(sp?) themselfs.

I found out that "canned air" is also R134a. I'm going with a hydrocarbon refrigerant like Enviro-Safe when I fix my A/C.

Im going to use 134 as a test mule for my rx-7 to make sure i fixed all the leaks, then charge it with that r12 i was talking aobut before.
oooohhh yeah. The thing will be blowing ice cubes at me :D

Some old ac's still use R12.
IT runs around 100$ a pound.
They use a Tool called a "sniffer: to check for big leaks.
The dye used is just luminescent , probly toxic to anyone who'd lick it (or some dumb S**T ).
We're all gonna die from CO2 poisoning,
and if not that ,
the earthquakes, volcanoes, huricanes, floods, droughts, and the SUN will cook us all.
Just like the dinosaurs we burn in our cars ....

I have heard r134a is 50 times worse at affecting the green house effect as r12 was at depleteing the ozone layer
so I guess we either bake or broil

One of the advantages of freon, is that it's non-toxic. You can inhale it with no harm at all. Before freon was developed, other refigerants were used, like ammonia, which can kill you if you inhale enough of it.
However, ammonia leaks do not depleat the ozone layer..... so kill a few now or a lot later........
