I have a '93 Ford Escort LX wagon 1.9L.
Current mileage at 130 K.
Does anyone know the average life (mileage-wise) of these engines if they are well maintained?
Thank you.

150-250. I think it should be kept in mind..only fair. That in cases where the WHOLE car is well maintained..and it not abused..that 250 is reasonable.
It is clearly NOT any big deal when one of these little cars/motors..goes 250 or 300 when looked after and used fairly.
It is NOT fair to the car..or the engine..when someones goes and the engine packs it in at say..100..even150..or even at a high mileage. BECAUSE they neglected the rad,w.pump.hoses,t.stat,a/f.,fan.and overheated it OR they ran it with a bad maf/02/injector etc..check engine lite on..ran it lean and burned a valve etc, or didn't change the oil etc.,etc.,
Same deal goes for overheating the bejezus out of the little thing then whining that the valve seat fell out.Goes into the "duh" file.

My '91 Pony had 264,000 on it when I sold it. The new owner has been driving it for 7 years. Speedo cable failed at 267,000 and was never replaced so he doesn't know what the current mileage is. I got it new and maintained it properly. Best vehicle I ever owned, except for the body rust.

I've got 137K on my Wagon, and hope to get another 200K out of of. Saw a vid on Youtube where a guy has a 335K Wagon. Looks like timing cover is off...

I pulled ours at 192,000 and replaced the piston rings. I also had the valve stem seals replaced. The engine didnt need anything else. i wouldnt have taken it out, but I was getting a puff of blue smoke on each mornings start-up, and we have exhaust emissions testing where we live. Any blue smoke and it will fail the emissions test.

I had a 1993 Escort LX 1.9L. The motor ran perfectly until 150K when a piston rod went. I did regular maintenance and assumed i could get about 200 out of it. The escorts are great, cheap cars, but i wouldn't expect to get much more than 150 out of it. About 50 miles before the motor went, i put 1200 dollars in parts to the car, a serious mistake. Included was a timing belt and an alternator, all at 150K.

93 Escort GT 1.8L 5-speed, 229k miles and counting, going to be replacing the timing/serpentine/v belts and water pump, and brake caliper here shortly, just did a tune up and alternator a few weeks ago. Got around 23 mpg on the last tank i had, 18 mpg or less when i bought it this previous november so its getting better.

You can rest assured, as these are well known for lasting very long. My brother has one with what I think it 140,000 miles. Still running strong, never had a problem. My mom had a Tracer (same thing as Escort) a few years ago, and she sold it with 220,000 miles on it, still running strong. It however did burn a quart of oil about every two to three days. It started to do that shortly before she sold it.
I would say that if you take care of it, you can probably get 250,000 at very most out of it. So, to put it short, you won't be needing a new car for another hundred thousand miles.
EDIT: BTW, my brother's Escort is the exact same model as yours, a 93 LX wagon.

As long as it doesn't drop a valve seat, it lasts a very long time. I'd expect at least 150,000 miles.

I'll be turning over to 300,000 km (just under 190,000 miles)this morning on my 95 and it's still running real strong. I fully expect to make 500,000+

Because I'm so proud of my little car, I have to chime in. I have 242,000 miles on my 1994 LX Sedan (I'm the original owner). I still get at least 35mpg, 38-39 if I'm on a road trip. I'm on my fifth set of tires, fourth windshield, third water pump and second radiator. I blame myself for ruining the first radiator though. I left a flushing T installed and I think it allowed a bunch of scale to build up in the system, eventually plugging up the radiator. Had to rod it out twice, then eventually the plastic on the sides failed from being taken apart. Doh! :screwy:
Overall, I'm not some manically obsessed maintenance freak, but I've gotten the oil changed every 3-5K miles (mostly). I try not to push the engine until it's warmed up, I back off the throttle if I hear pinging, stuff like that. I try to treat it well, and it's treated me well in return!

During my spring tune up, I decided to junk my 93 LX wagon. It had 256,000 trouble free almost repair free miles on it and ran beautifully but the body was just too rusted out. There is a long straight stretch of highway just before the salvage yard, and I figured screw it, I'm going to bury the speedometer one last time. The trooper got me for 85 in a 50 zone. When he walked up to my window, I told him exactly what I was doing and why I was speeding. He had a hard time holding back a smile as he chewed my ass and then told me to drive slow the last 3 miles and have a nice day. No ticket. After helping me pull the battery and tires, the salvage yard gave me a check for $198. If the body would have held together, I would have tried for 350,000 miles.

The 1.9's are a good little motor I had a 94 when i was in high school and I beat the piss out of it, at one point I went about 20,000 Miles between oil changes! Even with all the abuse the motor still made it to almost 150,000 miles, but it did teach me the value of maintaince. I still think that my 94 lx with the 1.9 would keep up with the 99 escort zx2 (130 HP) that I used to have and the 97 cavalier z24 (150 HP) that I curently drive.
