Ethan,
Are you thinking of an entire engine or a block only? For 800 clams, you'll find a block in need of major rebuilding, and only from someone who doesn't realize the value of these motors. The 396 is about one of the top 5 or 10 most popular American engines. So they are hard to find. A complete engine depending on condition will run from $1500 (beat-on, used-up, 2-bolt main and low performance components) to over $8000 (fresh pro built 4-bolt main with high performance matching components).
Hope this is helpful to you, and 800 isn't impossible. Some guys collect engines in their garages and sheds and their wives tell them that the pack rat stuff has to go and the next lucky person gets a heck of a deal. Keep your cash ready and if you find a real one grab it and run. Get to know the casting numbers and stampings to avoid getting a late model truck engine by mistake. Not that those are bad, but they are a little less desirable to fit in a Chevelle.

I'm one of those rat packer guys with a 396 on an engine stand in the garage. It is not for sale, sorry. Mine was out of a '66 passenger car and has the raised casting on the back of the block that says HIPERF/TRUCK.
I never ran the numbers but I think its a 375 HP motor. You can get a printout of just about any block or head number somewhere online, take it with you when you go hunting.
