Hi,
I just bought 2002 mazda millenia S (http://www.mazdaforum.com/m_18915/tm.htm#) with 103k on. Last week check engine light came on. I took it to the mechanic and he said that both the right and lthe left front catalytic converters have gone bad. Computer code 421, 431. He gave me an estimate of around $2000 ( $707 for each converter and labor) http://www.mazdaforum.com/image/s7.gif . He told me that mazda (http://www.mazdaforum.com/m_18915/tm.htm#) covers these converters only upto 80K miles http://www.mazdaforum.com/image/s6.gif . I have found some interent sites where same part is priced around $420-$450 each.Unfortunately i don't have any other mechanic in town who can read the codes of mazda. Dunno if this guy is tryin to rip me off? Any advise will be highly appreciated..thanks

I have the same issue as you replacing both front catalytic millenia 01 P
and it's expensive.2000.00 seems a bit high due you own the 2.3 or2.5?
Auotzone should be a second choice diagnostic test are free to make sure analysis is correct.I am fortunate that Atrust worthy Mechanic at Goodyear will do the job for 975.00 ouch but that the cheapest yet.I research the Internet and I come out better letting Goodyear do the Job.Try emission"

First time on here so I hope I'm replying properly. I have a 99 millenia S and last year I had both catalytic converters replaced, 02 sensors all because the check engine light was on - total cost done my Mazda dealer - $4,000.
Today, it is back at the dealers because of the check engine light on and now he says it is the vacuum t's - cost for that $460. They will then drive the car to see if the light comes back on since several codes came up. They say they have to fix the t's first before they can determine any other repairs.
Last year I would have had 80k miles on my car but they didn't tell me Mazda would pay anything. And the extended warranty I purchased when the car was new, has paid diddly squat. This car now has 93,000 miles. Can they really last along time or should I be thinking of trading?

lol just take it to your local mazda dealer. But for the codes have he's telling the truth. You might have some more problem that might have set those codes. Misfires and vaccume leaks will cause them but it's too late because your cats are destroyed.

For the second question, get rid of the car because they are known for the supercharger to go bad, leaking oil. But for the dealer they are doing the right thing. You have 3 plastic vaccume tees under the intake that goes to 3+ solinoid that control your supercharger / egr / etc. Your TCS light was on too if I assumed right. You should replace the tees first and see if the solinoid are bad. If solinoid are bad it will cost about 350 to fix. 220 for the solinoid. They just trying to save you money. S models are like rx7 over price shit that cost alot to fix. money pit.
