Looking at the 2006 2.5X or the 2.5XT Forrester with manual transmission premium package.
When I phoned the dealer, they were vague on the subject of what octane fuel I should use.
So, anyone here have any advice?
Thanks . . .

I have an 05 2.5X and the service men told me to just use "regular" which in PA is 87 octane. HOWEVER... I also was in to find out what the previous owners had done to the car, and they said it was in for knocking (never diagnosed by the shop). I mentioned that it had just started knocking for me the day before, and the guy said that Subaru motors don't take too kindly to the ethanol-gas from places like Sunoco, so that was probably it.
I haven't filled up with Sunoco gas since then, and I have never heard the knock again.
As for the car in general, I LOVE my Subaru!!! The manual is GREAT and I'm sure it helps with acceleration. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I like mine!!!

After climbing around both the Forrester and the Outback Wagon in the showroom, we've chosen to look into the Outback rather than the Forrester.
Outback has more room for humans.
ans we are biased toward the non-turbo model (2.5i) due to regular gas and better mpg.

Just got back from driving my 05 Forrester 2.5X to Florida from Mid-Michigan. Used 87 octane all the way. Consistant 28mph at Freeway speeds 70-75. At 60 to 65 32mpg. No knocking and plenty of power. Oh yes! And no Sunoco.
