electric turbo

has anyone ever used an electric turbo that hooks up to your air intake and runs off of your car battery? if so how was it? do you think it is waorth buying one??

Don't. It's bullshit.

Seriously, don't, or I'll come to your house and bitch slap you.

Just one of those things somebody thought of to rip people off on Ebay.

Don't. Got it?

PS

Technically, it's an electric supercharger. A turbo uses exhaist pressure to compress intake air charge. A supercharger uses a mechanically driven compressor.

And what's the problem with an electric supercharger?

Oh - if you're talking about the thing on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ELECTRIC-SUPERCHARGER-TURBO-WILL-FIT-ANY-VEHICLE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33741QQitemZ805 3175127QQrdZ1

That IS garbage - it's a toy at best, a recipe for engine damage at worst.

Now if there is a true electric supercharger (connected to the ECU, so it knows when and how much boost to give) - which I would expect to cost several hundred dollars - then it might be worth it.

Lightweight and compact for any engine compartment
Reinforced Plastic ABS housing (NO RUST!!!)
Low voltage draw leaving more power for you engine!!
2-3 PSI Boost
up to 45hp
HUGE gains on hp when used WOT (wide open throttle)
Simple connections for quick installation
AND OF COURSE THE LIFETIME SUPPORT AND WARRANTY

ABS plastic? Reinforced? WOW! This is high tech!

45 HP from 2 pounds of boost? WOO HOO! I gotta move to your planet, it's much easier to make power there.

No way...think how much power it would take to create a noticeable amount of boost, and there's no way your battery could produce that much power.....go look up the parasitic load of a belt driven supercharger, and you'll see that the only thing effective about that product is to separate you from your money.....Glen

Well, now wait, Glen. In the interests of technical accuracy:
The power to drive the supercharger isn't tied to the increased engine power. Turbochargers and superchargers work (partly) because they get more fuel/air into the engine than natural aspiration. The added HP comes mainly from the higher fuel burn rate. So you don't actually need 45hp of electrical power to a supercharger to get 45 more HP from the motor (I'm using hypothetical numbers, of course - the product description is clearly BS).

In case you have a problem with that, then the drag from the turbo (which is valid, of course) would have to be the same as the power gain from the turbo (less friction). That clearly doesn't jibe.

BTW I kind-of liked the part in the eBay listing about not harming the engine. Like there is a way to add boost without adding stress! (Still, I guess if the gadget is essentially useless, then you probably WON'T harm your engine! :)

Understand...I wasn't saying that the the power requirement for this device was equal to the supposed increased power output. However, the power it takes to compress air (i.e. increased boost) is not minimal, and this device is just a joke.

I'm very familiar with turbochargers (fixed, wastegate, and VG), but superchargers are a little less familiar.....I'm a diesel guy, and superchargers are not as efficient for them....take care, Glen

Exactly:lol:

Looks like a blow dryer converted to 12v, might make your girl happy but you wont see any gains. Might as well take the whole intake tube off run open TB.

Supercharges dont cause as much parasitic drag as you would think, you can turn a supercharger pulley just as easy as an alternator pulley. Im not saying there isnt any but SC and TC each have there own advantages.

If someone will fuy admits to buying one of these, il go meet up with jeffcoslacker so hes not the only one bitch slapping anyone. 2-3 psi out of that they must have used a 2.5" to 1/4" adapter flange to aim the air to make that realistic.

my friend has an accord, and the other day he was telling me about going to kmart or home depot or wherever and getting like a 7 psi air compressor and running that into the intake for some extra boost. I told him it probably wouldnt work, and he would have to get fuel upgrades and safc and everything. what do you guys think of this?

what is he smoking does he know much current an air compressor uses, let alone that a turbo/sc compresses the air in a different way than and an air compressor even if you get the cars electrical system to somehow hold up you would need a way for the air to be used in engine and and even if all this works you would be lucky to see any gains at all. And a nasty by product of air compressed in an air compressor is condensation, which is bad for the engine.

I saw a video on Streetfire where they used a 2 stroke leaf blower to "supercharge" a Ford Probe....and ran it on the dyno with and without....about 2 hp at WOT, I think it was...

A) Tell your friend to give you $150 and you'll give him a surprise, when he does give him a swift kick to the nuts. That will teach him not to spend money without thinking.

B) Please check the dates and don't bring back old threads.
