I have been told numerous things about engine oil so I'll ask you folks. I'm told SG spec but I can't find it. I'm told to stay away from synthetic but others have said it'll run cooler. 5w30, 10w30, straight HD30? Thanks, Norm. :banghead:

Depending on your local weather, you should run a low multi weight like 5-30 in cold weather and a heavier multi-weight, say 10-40 in warm or hot weather.
Stick with dino-oil instead of synthetic. It's cheaper and you should change the oil every 2,000 miles in these engines anyway.
For the transaxle, synthetic Hi-Po oil will work better than dino, and help your tranny last longer.

Thanks Gary and Alan. Gary, you said straight 30. Regular or heavy duty? Alan, you said dino-oil. What the heck is that? Thanks.

Dino-oil is just a term for regular old out-of-the-ground fossil oil. (non-synthetic) since it's theorized that the in-ground oil is the result of decaying dinosaurs.

Its just regular 30 weight Pennzoil motor oil.I usually get it at Auto Zone. When I bought my VW, the previous owner told me to run the straight 30 weight oil.He said the shop that rebuilt the engine, told him to run the 30 weight so I just figured that they knew what they were talking about and I have been using it ever since and I haven't had any problems, but I think it also depends on the weather conditions where you live as to what weight oil to use.I'm sure Alan knows more about this than I do.He has helped me out a lot on questions I have had on my bug. Thanks Gary. I'm up here in NH. I don't plan on driving it a whole lot in winter anyway. Mostly just because the road salt is really nasty. I've spent a lot of time re-doing the floorpans and the lower frame head. I don't want it to rust away on me. Thanks again, Norm.
