newb in need of some advise

i was trying to sell my '69 chevelle a while ago and think someone kept the keys to it. i still have the car but now i can't find the keys. i heard from someone that a locksmith can cut a new key from the ignition key code. is there a way to find out the code without having the locksmith do it so i don't get charged a lot? any info would be appreciated.

When the car was new the original keys had the code you're looking for on a section that gets knocked out, usually by the original owner, and saved in case the keys are lost. Since you don't have this you'll need the locksmith. Another option is to buy and install new cylinders with keys from a restoration parts company.

I agree with AS on getting a new cylinder installed. You would likely need a locksmith to do it, because the cylinder doesn't come out easily without the key. If it did, there would be a whole lot more stolen cars! :lol:
To save money you could remove the entire ignition switch assembly and bring that to a locksmith, but that takes time too without breaking any of the dash parts. At that point it's easier to just replace the switch and get a new cylinder too.
If you are still selling your '69 there is a guy on this forum looking for one not too long ago from PA.
P.S. you might still have the keys.......darn things like that always show up soon after you sell something or replace them after you've given up.

Call a local body shop they know of or have somebody on hand to do the column lock. Door locks you can do your self.
