Had the same problem. You can pop it out of its shell and test the circuit feeding into the back of the clock module. The wires may be disconnected or faulty. If there isn't a problem with the wires, you probably just need a new clock module. I think I was quoted $36 at the dealer. It's easy to install yourself. hope that helps! Good luck! Drew

same happened to my 2001, i was told it would be $85 from the dealer for a new one so i just use my cell phone for the time, or just buy one of those $5 digital clocks from any hardware or pharmacy type of place

The overhead clocks in the Subaru Forester had problems with one surface mount resistor coming loose. The clock was actually working, but no display could be seen. The fix is to take the clock out, take it out of the case ( be carefull to do this over a paper so you can see what falls out if any thing).
One of the surface mount resistors just to the right of the display needs resoldered. Careful, I soldered it back in with normal soldering instead of the surface mount type of soldering (it will stay in place).
Good luck
If the resistor is lost, replacements can be purchased at Radio Shack or Digi key. ( it is the same value as others on the circuit board 3.9 ohms or 3.9K ohms, I can remember the exact value)
