Sandblasting Calipers

I am planning on doing Thunderracing's brake kit to my T/A. I wan't to clean the calipers and then paint them, I know the caliper painting kits come with a cleaner but what would happen if I sandblasted the rust off the caliper. My work has a sandblaster so I could go in after hours and do it, would it hurt anything?

Not sure how well aluminum would like sandblasting...

If you have tha alumnium calipers don't sand blast them, instead carbo blast them (powdered walnut shells) If you have the iron calipers use glass beads to blast them.

I am not sure what I have, right now they are stock (I beleive that they are iron) . So since you can use glass beads on them I should be able to sandblast them. I will obviously being doing new pads so that won't be a problem.

I wouldn't use sand on them. Sand blasting and bead blasting are not the same thing. Bead blasting isn't as agressive and leaves a nice uniform finish. If they are iron and heavily rusted you may want to consider blasting with alumnium oxide.

i wouldnt try it unless you pull them completely apart, that sand gets in every little crack, if its aluminum just blast it a a real low pressure

Take the calipers off the car before you do anything to them, disassemble them and make sure when you are done you are very thorough when cleaning them. Personally, I wouldn't sandblast them, I would go for bead blasting instead, its not as harsh and its easier to clean up. If you don't disassemble the caliper you will end up with grit inside the caliper, it will leak in through the boot around the piston. Once you get grit inside the brake system, its going to be expensive to fix. Price a kit with new calipers, see how much more it costs, might be worth it to go that way instead, sell the old calipers on ebay.
