So both me and my mom have been looking into getting an aftermarket am/fm/cd headunit installed. we have a '96 windstar with the basic non-premium am/fm/casette deck. The current deck we are looking into is a "durabrand" am/fm/cd/mp3 deck from walmart which is currently going for something like $70. I also have searched various sites for a compatible wiring harness and this (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IiKEVU8if6S/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=103000&I=120705002) is the one im assuming is compatible with what weve got now.

Im just curious if there is anything else I should be worried about or would the headunit and wiring adapter pretty much take care of everything? Oh, and I also already have the removal tools needed to pull out the factory radio. I got them a while back to investigate the wiring to see if we had a factory amp or not.

Hi
I have not removed the OEM radio in my van, but have done so in a GM van and a car or two. I would have recommended crutchfield to you anyhow. Their database for purchasing a wiring harness has been dead on each time. I have purchased intallation kits from them that have always worked, and the kits came with diagrams for removing trim etc. So if their site says that is what you need, I would be pretty confident with the information.

The only problem you may encounter is the size difference. My 99 has a double DIN opening and most after markets are single DIN sized. There are kits to fill the extra opening but I fabricated my oen using a piece of acrylic and it looks great. The wiring adapter (sold at Walmart) should take care of the wiring.

If you are just looking for the MP3/CD features then the deck you have seen will work with the existing speakers....but if you are looking for improved sound you might consider changing speakers and getting an upgraded deck but that is of course dependent upon your needs and budget.
