I am in need of lots of help :( Me ,and my cousin made a bet last summer . My grad present is an old beat up 3rd gen 84 berlinetta . He has a 1993 cavalier . We bet that this summer we would pit our cars against eachother ,and then recently when i closly examined my present i noticed that it aint the v8 i was told was in there ,but it is a v6 2.8L . I do not wanna lose the bet :( Does any one have some suggesttions . Could i make it a mean street machine with the current engine , or am i going to have to drop a new engine :(

Drop a new one.. 2.8s are weak and have very little aftermarket. Although there is a turbo out there for it, it would be way better if you dropped in like a 3.4 or something in there, that will burn the Cavy

yea, you're pretty much dead in the water with that 2.8

*gives off evil chuckle* Well i could *burn it* , but then i dont think my cuz would be very happy . How much would it cost for a 3.4 . Some one told me to just make the jump ,and pick up a 350cbi , and pay the 2k canadian for it , but i am worried about the work that has to go with the drop . I know i would have to redo the tranny ,and then I was told to redo the wiring harness , but what would be the extent of that :S Would it be alot of work . btw what else would have to be done to it for the v6 ta v8 conerstion:screwy:

If you can handle it, drop a new motor. Since it's an '84, emissions shouldnt be much of an issue either.

Engine, tranny, rear end(you probably have highway gears), speedo calibrated, cooling system upgraded, all the accessories for the V8, in other words: lots of work.
See if you can find a decent V8 somewhere and sell your car for one thats already set witha V8.
I got a 94 Z28 for $2200... just gotta LOOK:wink:
Also, you'll usually get a better deal by checking newspaper classifieds without a picture, since there is no pic, people often look over them and in time prices will drop so they can sell it. Also always try to haggle the price down unless you're happy with it.

Race him, and after he wins... grab a piece of rope, and tie one arm behind his back and beat the shit out of him. When he asks why you did that, tell him that since he didn't understand that he rigged the bet, you thought you'd show him exactly what it means to fight a losing battle.

lmao.....If we where to go fist to fist me tieing and arm behind my back would be a loosing battle for him :P , but on topic....In all opinions what would be the most resonable priced engine drop for me then . I love the car , and where I am from camaros are not that popular. Nobody really is into the powertuning , and all that . Thats why when it comes to the knowledge I am in the blue . There aint no where to learn out here . I am thinking on moving just to pick up some classes ,and learn all about mechanic work. So you know unless i wanna get it shipped in a second hand motor is kinda outta the deal unless i can get one shipped in from the chevy dealership , but I am thinking that it would be a little too much for my pocket book . All in all i guess I am gonna have to get a new engine ,but i have been looking into 350's (5.7L) , and if i where to get one of those it is gonna cost me around the 2k canadian point ,and i dont even know if they are complete engines As far as I could tell the pictures didn't show headers or , and covers( I dont know what they are called exactly , but I think they cover the plugs . Made of metal ,and rectangle in shape):screwy: Like I said i dont know that much about mechanical stuff . All i know is i wanna learn, and i figure this to be a sure shot place ! So any feed on the better way for me to go for an engine would be good ,and any links would be perfect .

nonono... tie one of HIS arms behind HIS back. If you tied YOUR arm behind YOUR back, and still kicked his ass, I'd buy you a whole case of beer.
You're talking about Valve Covers, yes you need them.
You might want to look a crate engines (from Jeg's, Summit, etc) you might wind up with everything you need, but you're probably gonna pay 2-3 times what you will from a junk yard. Of course you'll be buying a NEW engine... and putting it in a weak Camaro.... It would make a real nice sleeper.
You're gambling with junk yard parts, some may be perfect and some may really belong there. If you know what you're doing, you can make out pretty well I would guess.

www.jegs.com (http://www.jegs.com) or www.summitracing.com (http://www.summitracing.com) - but you're spending some serious dough.
Someone posted about picking up a Maro with a V8 in it already... very good advice. You're still going to find tons of stuff you want to do to it, whether it needs it or not. You might as well start out with a better platform.
Sell your 2.8 and put that money towards a V8 Maro, you'll be light years ahead.
Think of it like this... do you want to feed the cow grass and water, let the bastard sit around farting and chewing on it for a few days and then get squeeze it's titties to get some milk, or go to the store and buy it and have it now. It's gonna cost you more to feed the damned cow and wait, than to start off with what you want. You can always put chocolate in your milk. (Can you tell I have small children yet?)

What I mean is ... You gotta do what you gotta do, IF it's a doable option, upgrade to a better Maro and move forward. You're gonna dump a ton of money in your 2.8 anyway. Might as well spend it up front if you can.

Why does it have to be an 84 Berlinetta??? There's PLENTY of V8, 5 speeds around, you just have to look. If it's close enough you can drive it home, if not ship it home... FYI I shipped mine from South Carolina to Philly for $600.
I almost bought a sweet 81 Z28 in Florida for $4000, 5 speed, t-tops, Navy on Tan, it was NICE. It would have run me $700 to get it here, but was WELL worth it... then I stumbled across my 70, and the rest is history.

You could put a new 2.8 in it, little beefier (especially the bottom end) and give it a little whiff of the funny gas when needed?

sorry for the late reply , but here is the reason for the 84 berlinetta...This is my first car . The trails i went threw to get it is just out of the world .I was promised this car 4 years ago ,and now finally it is mine . He gave it to me in his,and my moms divorce ,and told me that it is now up to me to get it up,and going. Last summer i set up so many races for when the car gets going that it just aint right . My dad had told me that the car was a V8 ,and i believed him so i thought i would smoke all these people , but then i found out that its a bottle , and a half of coke :P . Is there any mods any one would know of for the 2.8 then . Cuz a new motor right now is way outta my price range .i dont even know how many miles are on the motor . The digi-dash reset ,and i have yet to get it working :P , but like i said this is my baby . I aint the smartest person with cash ,and i blow it like it where magically put into my pockett . Damn that hard earned dollar . So I figure all money that comes my way instead of blowing it on booze ,n other substances i'll spend it on my car :P So what do you think is there any serious mods that can be done to my motor .I have looked around on the net ,and i dunno what to get . I duno what would be the best parts to optimize my performance !!!!

I know it means a lot to you, but V6 Berlinettas aren't that special. It's one of those packages that are made for the mid-life crisis people to make them think they have something special. Kind of like the Z82 package on 4th gens:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/flatlander757/Misc/Z82_1.jpg
The Berlinetta isn't as stupid as the Z82 lol, it was just a fluffed up "luxury" car. Not built for performance really.
Here is some real in-depth info on V6 Berlinettas:
http://www.camarosource.ca/php/camaro_info_db/index.php?year=1984&act=summary_profile&mid=199
107HP isn't something I'd even attempt to sink money into.
Honestly, for a budget, sell the Berlinetta, buy an early 90s Ford Festiva, and drop a Mazda B6T(turbo... ~200hp) engine in there, it's nearly a direct bolt-in. I'm helping a friend do this later this summer, should be fun. It's even a fun to drive car with the stock 63hp :p
http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/tech/0401scc_hybrid/
There's what we're using as motivation. A sub-2000lb car is very easy to make fast:iceslolan

Lol. All i would be able to sell my car as is a parts car to some other yahoo . I would get maybe 300 bucks tops on it ,and so far 2 grand canadian has been put into it just redoing the exhaust , because when i first bought it the whole thing was rusted. Its also in need of a serious paint job ,as there was some body work done to it so u can see where my dad used some bondo or what ever he used ! So all in all as far as a think it would be just as easy for me to work on this one . Cars around here are few and apart for sale ,and they all range from the 4k-20k point . And these are not even good cars . Might as well go by a new car with a minumum package ,and work on it for those prices . :(. So now u should see a little more with my vision . Also how much horse power would this turbo give me . Any links to where i can find one . And last ,and not least is that it for mods . No ram air or anything like that .Can I even use the ram with the charger :S Thanks all your guys help has been exactly what i said help ,and i thank you all . :icon16:

a turbo head unit would more than likely run you at least $800... the turbo manifolds would be another $700 or so(you can't use your entire exhaust that you had redone), the electronics I have no clue, but I'll guess no less than $400, then you need the boost gauges/turbo timer/blow off valve/wastegate which will end up costing a decent sum, and then to top it off you need it dyno tuned, so figure another $400(but since there are NO performance places around like you said, figure in $50-100 in gas to get there and back). And from the looks of it you don't know how to do a whole lot, so figure in well over $2000 to have it installed. That's not even figuring in other little odds and ends like new injectors, fuel pump, the rest of the "hot parts" to/from the turbo, and an intake setup you will need.
Turbos = EXPENSIVE on cars not originally meant for it. Hell, on a 4th gen you will spend no less than $8k if you want a half-decent turbo kit.
Superchargers are still expensive, but not as bad. You would still need new injectors and fuel pump. It would basically bolt on and need re-tuned.
I don't know how stout the stock bottom end is, or what the compression ratio is, or how well the pistons would hold up under that kind of abuse.
You've scheduled a losing race.

What about nitros???
Damn dude, I understand you situation, but you ARE behind the 8-ball on this one. You'd be much better off dumping your cash into a loan, and spreading it out a little rather than attempting this, I think.
Here's one that hasn't come up, and I've heard people raise - Are the frames on the "less performance oriented" models the same frames as the performance models. IE If he takes his 84 base model V6 and lets just say manages somehow to get a 400+ HP heart it in, is the frame able to take that kind of torque, etc. - OR - os it the same frame and he'll be ok???
Because if the foundation ain't there, you're just pissing up a rope. (Not saying anything derogatory here, just making a point.)

Just don't go overboard with a ridiculous amount and pray the motor holds together.

Yeah.. you might actually be able to win since you can mash on the gas since its on dirt, so he wont have that much traction.. you'll be able to throw the car into a drift if done right too.. and it isnt that much different than from it being on wet pavement.
