Hi ! I bough a 1998 Winstar GL 3.8 a few month ago. It has 104k and seems to run well except for some transmission problems.

It shift very well, but some times when I stop the truck, the transmission downshift in 1st gear but it feel like it is in neutral. The only way to get the truck move is to put the shifter in 2nd and then I can clear the intersection. It will do that a few time, and then the problem disapear. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd is no problem, as well as downshifting. I also had the same problem (but only once since I own it ) with the reverse.

This problem will come back once in 15 days, then it will do that at every stop for two days but will work fine a few times in between. I've check the oil level and it seems to be OK.

Do you think it could be an adjustment to the valves or bands ? What about an oil change ? Or is is really what I think, a grand and a half for a new one...

Thank you for any upcomming little hints

did you check the level with the fluid at operating temp? what color is the fluid? do you have the check engine light on? it sounds more like a mechanical problem electrical problems will usually cause more than one speed to malfunction.
