I know there's a million and one posts about the quadratrac II stuff but I can't find my answer by searching so...here's mine:

The 4wheel drive worked fine when I bought the 99 JGCLtd in AZ (circa April 05) as evidenced by a hill-climb I did (nothing wheel-turning or anything, just climbed up a solid, dry clay/dirt hill to restore testosterone lost while driving a Taurus between this Jeep and my previous 2, a 96 XJ and a 94 YJ.
Anyhow, it worked then. Living in AZ, I didn't have a lot of call to use the 4wheel but we love the car. Now we live in MI. For a Thanksgiving day surprise, I left the driveway in the snowy weather and totally spun out. Hmmm, I said. I thought this Quadra Trac thing was supposed to Kick in automatically.
So I read all about these 247 TCs and realize that the gerotor is probably the culprit. OK now when the jeep gets warm and it's on the highway at 60-70 mh, it makes this (oh I hate trying to describe noises) grindy, vibratory hummy noise in the area which seems to be the front diff/driveshaft area. It was not present prior to realizing the 4wheel drive didn't work. We drove this jeep from AZ up to WA and down the Pacific coast this summer with zero drivetrain issues.
Also, when I shift the TC to 4lo, it makes a loud clunk in the TC area as it goes along and it does not actually engage the front diff.
Another thing that might go unnoticed is that there is no appearance of a "4wheel drive engaged" light on the dash in either TC shift position. I mention this because my YJ light wasn't working one time and found out the guy who worked on it last "forgot" to reconnect a vacuum hose so the front diff was not engaging.
The WJ has a type 3 front driveshaft with the CV joint in it.
I guess my question is if there is a list of possibilities for what could be wrong and if the CV joint in the driveshaft could be to blame for the 4wheel drive not working issue...
ANY help would be appreciated as I really don't have the money to be replacing everything from my brake pads to the TC just to find out it was a bad driveshaft. Thank you...

...the mystery continues...I just drove the GCLtd on the gravel (snow is melted here now) and the 4wd totally works in the gravel. The 4lo still makes the clunking noise. I also observed that when the TC is in neutral and you put the transmission in any gear a distinct/disturbing grinding similar to shifting a manual without the clutch can be heard. Not super loud but definitely there and it stays there even if you put the trans back in neutral. When I put the TC into hi or lo the noise goes away. That should be good news to me in that it may not be the gerotor...I hope.
So could I maybe just have a linkage adjustment issue?
HELP!
