2000 Taurus engines - timing belt or chain?

I believe there were 2, 3.0 v6 engines in 2000; a 153 hp Vulcan and a 200 hp Duratec.
Is there any way to tell which engine is which by looking at the engine in the car?
And, does anybody here know for certain, whether either engine has a timing belt or chain?
Also, at what mileage are people replacing their timing belts, if these engines use a belt?

Both engine have timing chains, no need to replace. The DOHC motor says duratech on a plastic shield under the hood, and the car is badged with a 24V DOHC on the front fender between the front door hinge and front tire on both sides. Its definitely got MORE punch than the vulcan motor, and is quite fun to drive.

Excellent. I'm going to look at a few tommorrow and that info will help. When I asked the current owners those questions tonight, all I got for a response was "huh??, It's got the 6 cylinder engine". Sometimes it's nice to have a clue about what you're selling. :rolleyes:

I have a 24v Duratec, it's wonderful, mine's a 1999, in general I like to conserve gas and "moose" my way around, the car can be pretty silent at slow speeds.
Only once in my 3 weeks with the car have i tested the throttle, and it really can roar, pretty impressive.
In general I think the Duratec DOHC engines are more reliable, definitely more fun to drive (or able, highway, etc)

I have tauruses with both engines sitting in my driveway.
I also had a 94 Vulcan that I drove for 276K before it was wrecked.
They are both very good engines.
THe Vulcan has proven itself for years and is one of the most reliable and problem free engines that Ford has ever done.
The OHV (vulcan) has more bottom end torque but is easily outran by the Duratec after it gets moving.
Don't buy one unless it has the Duratec (DOHC). You will understand after you have driven both.
