They're PETS, not CHILDREN!!

I know people love their pets, but lets keep things in perspective here!! If I get one more cutesy Christmas card from over-the-top animal lovers, I'll puke!!

Do not refer to your pets as your 'children'. They are not. They are animals. To call them children insults real kids and their hardworking parents everywhere.

You are NOT your pet's mommy or daddy!! You did not give birth to them and you are not even the same species.

Do NOT dress your pets up in cute outfits!! Other people do not find this cute or amazing. The animals do not like cute little hats, sweaters, boots etc. Thats why they squirm and fight when you try to put the damn things on them! Dogs have eaten their owners for less than this.

Your pets DO NOT know it's Christmas (or their birthday, Easter, whatever!) They are not 'eagerly awaiting Santa and their presents!'

And most of all, do NOT dress up your pets, put their pics on your Christmas cards, call them 'mommy's little children'! It's NOT cute and NO ONE cares!!
If you do, all your relatives (and the friends you have left) will know exactly how desperately lonely and pathetic you really are!!

Edit: Yes, I love pets too; this thread is about perspective, and not about disrespecting animals or their owners.

I can see the thing with clothes and crap, but if you have a cute dog or cat to put on a card, i would think thats ok...and I find it amusing to watch my dogs tear open gifts.

We put shirts on our dachshund, but it's because his stomach breaks out into a rash since he's so low to the ground and we think its the grass that does it.

I love my dogs and jokingly refer to them as the kids, but they still eat out of a bowl on the floor and do their duty outside.

When Alex and I used to be involved in the car club scene more, we knew a guy in his 30s who had a shih-tzu and pushed it around in a stroller...that guy had issues.

I yell at my mom all the time for this. Well, did when I was home. She'd out a sweater on my dog over time my mom learned she kinda hated it. I knew she did and i used to use it as punishment for her. Now that was funny!

But i love my puppy!!! :D And i get to see her in a week!

also, animals on cards arent bad...just the pet though, maybe.

my next door neighbors are the worst I've ever seen at this. When I was helping them move in, I saw a little canopy bed. I asked them what it was for, since they didn't have kids. They looked at me like i was crazy and were like "it's for our dogs! our dogs are our kids!"
They have kid carriers on the back of their bikes. One for each dog. Their house is FILLED to the TOP with pictures of their dogs. More than most parents have of kids. One dog is getting old... They've actually got it on a respirator. No joke. They give their dogs gifts for christmas. The dogs actually each have their own bedrooms.

A respirator???? If my dog got to that point, I would probably have to put it down...even though that's an ugly and hard decision to make. But at some point you have to realize you are bankrupting yourself for a creature whose lifespan is a fraction of ours and after age 8-10, anything can go wrong.

I will go to certain lengths for my pets, but I have to evaluate the pet's overall health/quality of life, costs involved and determine if the treatment is something that will cure the problem or only act as a bandaid til things get worse. Don't get me wrong I love my pets to death, but I don't want to run up $10,000 in credit card debt and then have the pet die on me anyway.

Last winter our Doberman got bit by what we believe was a recluse spider and he got a flesh eating wound on his foot. Obviously that's not something you just let go and hope for the best. We spend nearly $650 or so for treatment, it was unexpected and we had to dig into savings for this, but at the same time, he was only 5 months old at the time, he was very healthy otherwise, and had his whole life ahead of him. We saw our regular vet and also an emergency clinic vet. The emergency vet was talking plastic/cosmetic surgery to treat and close the wound...to the tune of $2500+. He tried telling us the wound would not heal otherwise. My regular vet said the wound would heal on its own eventually, however he would have a nasty scar. We opted for banage/dressing changes every 3 days and antibiotics for the next month. I can live with a scar, he's not a show dog. I was more worried about having to amputate if the damage went too far.

Here's the end result, not bad. I should have sent this to the emergency vet who said he wouldn't heal without surgery:

And this was the wound at its worst state (DONT CLICK IF YOURE SQUEEMISH OR EATING A MEAL)

eeeesh! your poor poor dog. That's amazing that it healed w/o surgery.

I agree that some people love their pets too too much.

But I don't care. They'll never have the same bond as me and my pet centipede. He's sooo cute.

LOL it's not a hat that he wears... I just balanced it on his head for 4 seconds to take the picture

Did the same with my other dog, Niko:

i dunno about the whole dog clothing thing...i mean isn't that the reason why they have fur on them?!......the people i can't stand are the ones who carry their dogs in bags....i think that's sheer stupidity...they have legs, they can walk. another thing that gets me weirded out are the people who have make-out sessions with their dogs....some people really get into it too.....gross.....

Do not refer to your pets as your 'children'. They are not. They are animals. To call them children insults real kids and their hardworking parents everywhere. That depends, the kids I see around here I would end up calling animals and in turn the pets as children (since they are better behaved). :evillol:

Seriously, while its true that some pet owners take it a bit over the line, there are at times that a dog (can't say the same for cats) need a coat or sweater while outside when the weather is extremely cold. Even the news stations advise to do it. A few seconds outside can cause frostbite and the salt hurts their paws. While putting dog foot boots on is only recommended for the most extreme cases, at least a dog sweater is necessary when its really cold outside. But I see your point if its about those that dress their pets on nice sunny days. It just looks weird.

As for calling pets children, well, some pet owners (me included) really take a liking to our pets and consider them as family or as an extended family. Therefore as any family we do birthdays, presents etc.

BTW, check your email Magic, I just sent you a online Christmas card with my pet in it. :evillol: Merry Christmas.
