Is the 2.4L bassed on an earlier engine or all new, or...?

The 2.4L engine is GM's ecotec, which they use in quite a few cars. It has nothing to do with the other engines used in the G6.
Its pretty good though for a I4. 167 HP, and ecotecs are made to be quiet, reliable, and good on gas.
If I was to get a G6 I would actually want the ecotec engine. It saves gas, and is easy to upgrade. Also you have peace of mind knowing its reliable.

I couldn't disagree more. You're sacraficing gobs of power (201hp/220torque) for something that is hardly more fuel efficient. The 3.5 is a fantastic engine, great on gas, great real world performance at a heck of a price. I've never liked 4-bangers in mid-size cars and the base V6 being as cheap as it is I can't imagine choosing the ecotec over it.

I never said the 3.5 wasnt good. I like all the engines in the G6.
However is does get an extra 1-2 MPG, and costs $3,000 less to get the I4 then the V6. Also the ecotec isnt a typical I4... Its much more quiet then most, and it also has a lot of torque at lower RPMs.

Another reason I prefer a 4 banger is easy (er) maintenance, particularly spark plugs.

I love My G6. I bought the 2.4 for the gas mileage. My son is a Marine and I travel alot to see him. I have had it for 5 months and I am getting 38 mpg hwy and 32 city....and they say it will get better. It is a very quiet tight car and for a 2.4 it can really pick up and go. Lots of room in front and rear also the trunk too. The only problem I've had was the starter fuse was defective (caused the car not to crank one day) and the car was towed by Roadside Assistance to the dealer and fixed within 3 minutes. Very impressed with the service. :)
