Flashing "S" on '91 Honda Accord?

I own a 1991 Honda Accord SE and experiencing this strange problem and hoping I can get some input or possible remedy. I have this flashing "S" on my instrument panel and the speedometer stays on "0" MPH reading at any speed when it happens, then eventually the check engine light follows. Generally, the car starts off normal and this problem only occurs sporadically. Normally the "S" is steady solid when I engaged the sports option on my automatic shifter but in this case, engaged or not, I get the flashing "S". I recently added a security alarm on this vehicle, professionaly installed, and soon after I started getting this problem. I don't know if it's related or it happened by coincidence. I don't think the installer can screw up my instrument panel during the wiring installations, or is that possible? I'm reaching out to anyone out there with Honda expertise to give me a hand. I appreciate any input or suggestions.

ive never had that problem. i too have an AT/w ss, and i had a viper alarm installed with autostart and ignition/fuel-injection cutoff. if yours did too, maybe they messed up the wiring since alot is done under the hood. but either way, COMPLAIN. they obviously messed up your car somehow if it wasnt doing it before. professionally installed means something depending on where you get it done, but even the best might mess up every now and then.

Hi this is Luis, I have a 91 accord also and I also have the "S" flashing and my speedometer also does not work it also stays at "0". I asked about that situation at the honda dealership and they told me that my cruise control does not work. I tried it and I kind of guessd how fast I was going and my cruise control did not pick up. Under your hood if you see the cruise control, "Big round end, (silver) with a long wire running into the body of the car, that most likely would have to be changed. That is something that I also have to do. It can be expensive, the dealership told me that it could be anywhere from $650 to about $1500. I would try going to a honda junk yard or where you can buy honda parts for cheaper, that is what I am going to do. Try it out and let me know. Good Luck to you. Luis '99.

Thanks guys for all the support but managed to solve my problem myself by surfing the web. I found this site "Mitchell Buick Honda Bulletin Board" with forums that covers my topic and all other Honda related issues (along w/Buick, of course). The flashing "S" turned out to be the Speed Sensor and I already replaced it. If you guys need the site contact me and I'll also include the site where to get the speed sensor for less and detailed instruction (w/pics) on how to replace it.

:D LOwACCORD91 & dabradda, I got you two covered. Hope it helps!
:( epic69 - from the syptoms you describe, sounds like you're experiencing a different problem. You did the ECU test and indicated that its the VSS(Speed Sensor) issue? I took the liberty in checking your post history. You've indicated once that you got an ECU reading of 7 on this particular problem, which refers to throttle angle sensor or circuit. VSS (Speed Sensor) ECU reading should be 17. Make sure you follow the instruction on how to retrieve your ECM codes carefully, and double check your work. I can still give you the info, its your time and money, not mine. I need your email address or change your personal setting to accept email, and I'll be happy to send it. Really hope it helps!
I appreciate it if you guys can just update me on the outcome, on this forum.

usually the blinking s means an error in atcu in the 90 and 91's. the 92 and 93's will have the d4 flashing if there is an errror in the atcu. just short the blue connector to pull out the codes for the engine, and if there is no error for the engine the d4/s will flash the codes for you. usually a good cleaning of the sensors contacts will take care of the tranny error codes.

I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX:
When accelerating while driving or after a stopping at a stop light or sign, my car hesitates. Once I get to the desired speed the car runs fine. Also my speedometer and odometer aren't working anymore, but occasionally if I drive over 65 MPH it will temporarily work for 5 miles or so. The engine light comes on and the green "S" light flashes after driving about 1/4 mile no matter how fast I drive.
I've looked at a site and they say it's a speedomoter chip and it would cost about $175.00 (of course the dealer charges more). Also, it could be caused by a few wires touching each other. Any information would be appreciated.

Could someone please send me the link for the site about the flashing "S" problem. I have a 90 Honda Accord EX that has this problem. It also has a problem going in and out of lock up. I unpluged the upper servo and that problem stopped. But the flashing "S" is still there. The transmission changes perfectly, just doesnt go into lock up. Im sure that I would get better gas mileage if this was fixed. Thanks for any and all help.

ok heres the problem, both the RPM and MPH rev at the same time, like when your driving. also, when its on park, the car tend to move, even though its not on drive. another thing. my D4 light is flashing code 7 and 8. my manual says its a throttle angle and TDC position. does anyone know where those are located, and what i would have to do to have it fixed. also this other site says code 7 and 8 are shift solinoid'A' and shift solinoid 'B'. does anyone know where that is located too and what i would have to do to have it fixed. let me know if anyone can help, pics of the shift solinoid 'A', shift solinoid 'B', thorottle angle, and TDC position would be great for me to locate the parts, thanks guys, thanks a bunch...

I have the same problem with my 91 Accord (117K miles). Sport Light starts flashing, Check Engine Light comes on, Speedometer stops working. When I turn off the ignition, then turn it back on, everything is OK.
This has happened twice in two years. Also on a couple of separate occassions, the speedometer started acting flakey, dropping to zero, then shooting up, then zero... Until I turned the ignition off and turned it back on.
Since it's only happened a couple of times, I'm not sure if it is a transmission problem or not. It does seems to me the vehicle doesn't shift as nicely as it used to (seems like it doesn't want to shift).
Tried to send email, but it wouldn't let me.
Please send me that link you talked about relating to the speed sensor.
I'd like to know where to find it in the engine, and where to purchase one. Thanks.

My '91 EX 'S' light would come on and the tranmission would get stuck in 2nd gear, on not downshift, or not go in reverse from park. I could reset it by disconnecting the positive battery cable, but it would come back in a couple of days.
My mechanic diagnosed a bad TCM or TCU. A used or remanufactured unit costs about $280, but I found one on eBay for $15. You don't need the exact part number. My original was 28100-PX0-833, but I replaced it with a 28100-PX4-921.

I read through the posts on this thread and thought that it might be helpful to some if I posted a link that has more information on replacing the speed pulser and or sensor. I replaced the speed pulser in my 90 Accord EX auto which sits on top of the speed sensor and this corrected the Flashing S light, malfunctioning speedo and tach. Anyway, here's the link below.

ABS, real weird....It stayed on, somewhow reading all these forums, I came accross "Clean" well, I sprayed under the brake assembly all 4 wheels, seems like some dirt was caught...Now, I start the car, the ABS is off, I drive 100 yards, the light comes back????Real weird!!!! Next step is to try and spray the dirt off again, then will eventually get a wheel sensor????

Check your fluid level in your brake reservoir and make sure it's up to the max line and see if that helps.

Blinking S light, Check engine light, Speedometer pegged at 0.
Diagnostic Code 17 from the check engine and a 3 from the S light.
I am having trouble locating the part(s) for sale on the internet.
Need your recommendations on where to find the parts what they cost and what does the "S code" of 3 mean? Thank you so very much.
