The Vegas were good little cars, except for one critical shortcoming.
The engines were a new design, which had an iron head and aluminum block.
These engines MUST have a good cooling system, with a good radiator and the proper coolant level must be maintained.
These engines have little reserve coolant capacity.
Often these engines overheated if the cooling system was neglected.
Overheating would blow the head gasket or allow the pistons to score the cylinder walls.
The aluminum block had no iron cylinder liners so the specially-coated cylinder walls scored easily. This led to an oil burning problem.

So these cars had an undeserved reputation of being unreliable oil burners, when, in fact, they were just a little finniky and required proper maitenance.

Also these Vegas pioneered a revolutionary way of shipping cars by train from the factory. The cars were transported vertically inside specially designed rail cars, with the front of the car pointing straight up. This way, nearly twice the number of new cars could fit inside each train compared with conventional methods.
Want proof? Look inside the oil pan of the engine. It has an unusual baffle which would hold engine oil and prevent it from leaking out the rear of the engine when it was in its vertical position.

Finally, the Vega was restyled in 1974 to make the Chevy Monza, Olds Starfire, Pontiac Sunbird and Buick Skyahwk. These were very successful cars which never had any of the Vega's bad reputation and were made until 1980.

Finally, GM of Canada sold the Pontiac Astre, which was a Vega with a Pontiac badge, in Canada only (I believe)

I have one (1977) that will carry the front wheels for almost sixty feet when it launches. Makes for a pretty fun ride. The worst thing Chevy ever did was not offer the Vega with a smallblock from the factory.
