96 Chevy Silverado - System Advice?

Hey Everyone! I'm new here - found the site while searching for suggestions on components to replace the stock stereo in my 96 Silverado Extended Cab Pickup. I have an idea of a system & components to use and would like to hear what you knowledgeable folks thought of it. As to music, I listen to mostly Classic Rock from the 70's to current - my lady loves the 80's so there we are.

My truck has the 1.5 DIN stock head unit with separate stock CD below. Front doors have the separate tweeter located in front of the power window/door controls and 6"? midrange speakers in the door kick panels - Rear pillars have 4x6's but I wasn't figuring on using anything there in the new system.

I'd like to stay with a stock/stealth look all around and to spend around $1500 or so - the following is my rough idea for the system.

Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P77DH

Front Speakers - Boston Acoustics SL60 6-1/2" Component System

Front Amplifier - Hifonics Zeus ZX4000 - 100 Watts x 2 chan. @ 4 Ohms

Rear Sub Enclosure & Driver - Q Logic QL-C1GMX110D + Kicker 10" CompVR CVR104

Sub Amplifier - either the Hifonics Titan TX1005D - 350 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms or Hifionics Titan TX1505D - 500 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms

Is the Pioneer DEH-P77DH a workable choice as my HU? - it has 3 sets of 4v preouts (Front, Rear, Sub/Non-Fading), a High-Pass Crossover (50/80/125Hz, -12dB/Oct.) and Low-Pass Subwoofer Crossover (50/80/125Hz, -18dB/Oct., +/-12dB), and a 3 band Parametric EQ. I know it's not an Alpine or some other big name with lots of bells & whistles but I dont want to worry about the motorized face taking a $hit on me, etc.

your system looks pretty good. the main thing you're going to find anyone say on here is "go listen". what may sound good to me may sound pretty bad to you.

the cool thing about your car, and if i'm thinking correctly it's like my dads' suburban. there is already a stock tweeter mounting spot, so you won't have to buy quick panel enclosures.

if you can, i would look at CDT Audio component speakers. I like them, but then again, don't just take my word, if you get the chance go out and listen to all the stuff you're thinking about. just play around with the stuff. and maybe the shops can give you other ideas. take a CD with you and they should play it using different equipment. that will help you decide.

just my two cents.

His components should be fine but while hes at it he should change the rear speakers out and buy a 4 channel amp and do a whole overhaul at the same time. Another thing i would look at is a different sub the compvr is a good sub but theres better stuff out there for the same price that will give you better results as far as bass output and sound quality. Then again hightek is right no 2 people will like the same thing, and whats funnier is that i was trying to reply and i was going to recomend the cdt comps over the boston ones but my comp kept fucking up. But the cdt's are an awsome speaker and you can get them off ebay for about $80 for there lower line speakers or b stock. But yeah over all that does look like a good setup.

That's an awesome setup there. I hope you like it. I know I would :D

check out CDT and Crystal Audio componets.

amp is fine

however your sub situation is a little weak. a single CompVR 10 isnt the greatest of clean bass or low bass.

Thanks for all the replies

I'm open to suggestions on the sub driver as I've never setup a subwoofer before.

The Q Logic box is sealed, can mount a driver up to 5 7/8" in depth and has 0.65 cu. ft. internal volume. With those facts, the specs on the amps that I'm considering using to drive the sub and the type of listening I do, I was hoping to get some good suggestions for a driver from knowledgeable people.

whoa. 0.65 cubic feet for a kicker compVR is suffocating it. Kicker subs usually like larger boxes (minus the older circular solobarics). I would go larger (like ~1.0) if you can. If not, I'm sure people here are able to suggest you something that will work in that small .65 cube box :)

well you dont need anything outstandingly loud from the music you said you listen to. However you would probably enjoy a nice flat responce down to 30Hz or so. a higher Qtc enclsoure with such a driver wouldnt be ideal.
im assumeing you want to keep the driver and enclosure 100% under the rear seat, so a single 10 or 12 is ideal. if you would like to stay mainstream an alpine Type R in a 0.7 Qtc enclsoure (ill have to run it by WinISD to see the net volume) would be nice though a tad more expensive.

an RE SE 10 or 12 with similar wattage as the CVR in a 0.7 Qtc enclosure would also sound very nice.

since mr. Dan is finally getting his company up and running agian, snatching up one of these Tempest 10's or 12's, agian with the same wattage, would be cool too...be sure to give us a review of their new drivers (they redesigned everly last speaker they had and moved to a new build house).

http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=Tempest%20T12-D4

its too bad they are sold out right now but a sound splinter RL-i 10 would be very nice

any one of thoes drivers would yeild great results, however for BEST results take a shot at building your own enclosure to the correct volume to yeild the optimal Qtc for the flattest responce curve and lowest F3.

also, abotu the CD player, do you want a 1.5 DIN unit or do you think you would be satisfied with a better unit from Crutchfeild... all units from crutchfeild come with everything (harnes adapters, dash kits, excetera) you need to install it and have it look good. its all included in the price (some say crutchfrild is overpriced but they forget it comes with everything you need).

and i dont know where you are getting thoes compoents for but you could get some NICE componets for the prices im seeing thoe s go for. i havent heard thoes though so they could be really good componets.

I plan on calling Resonant Engineering tomorrow to talk about their RE 6.5 comps as well as the RE 10" sub.

The place I found that had nearly everything listed as being stocked was www.Sonicelectronix.com - price totals below are for new items with shipping and 8.25% sales tax added. I found the Q Logic box at www.CarDomain.com for about $175 shipped.

Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P77DH - $261

Front Speakers - Boston Acoustics SL60 6-1/2" Component System - $250

Front Amplifier - Hifonics Zeus ZX4000 - 100 Watts x 2 chan. @ 4 Ohms - $148

Rear Sub Enclosure & Driver - Q Logic QL-C1GMX110D + Kicker 10" CompVR CVR104 - $175 box - $140 Kicker

Sub Amplifier - either the Hifonics Titan TX1005D - 350 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms or Hifionics Titan TX1505D - 500 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms - $230 for either amp

I've never bought anything from either of these two places - reviews I have read online (supposedly from customers) have seemed to be mostly positive. I called & talked to a person at both places - some of the stuff is covered by the manufacturers warranty (1 year) and some by a "in house" 1 year warranty. Getting warranty coverage without a hassle is the thing that concerns me when thinking of buying from these places online. Any comments on this concern or these two sellers?

cardomain is great, never heard of the pther place. check out Onlinecarstereo.com, best deals on the net and they honor their 1year warranty pretty well. plus free shipping on all things over $99

I have a set of RE comps, they are very nice cops but it takes some playing with the treble on the head unit and placement of the tweeters to get them to truely shine. however some people dont like them, most of these put them in sealed alighments, mine are IB, as will yours.

the RE 10 would be more of an equivelant of just a kciker Comp...not a CVR, however the SE is a setp above the CVR. yet they stay inder $200 for the 15 if yo uget them direct from RE. if you have a nRE dealership within X ammount of miles RE will defer you to them and you will have to pay a bit more.
to get some truely great responces about RE's products head over to Soundillusions.net and sign up to their forum. that is RE's offical message board.
on the phone the people who answear arent too enthusiastic and dont act like they want to help you, more like droids set there to take down info from people purchasing their product, maybe enter a zip code or two into the computer. they sure as hell act like im biting their ass when i ask for quites and dont order right away...but oh well. everonce in a while you will get someone who is enthuseastic...but every time i call and am actually ordering something i get this asian guy who asks me fore my adress a thousand times... anyway. lol dont get discouraged agaist RE if your phone experence isnt top notch.

for the price of that Q-Logic enclosure i am confident you could build your own (my enclsorue for my 18 took 2 sheets of MDF and 2 bars of all thread and 2 tubes of silicone and a bottle and a half of wood glue and 2lbs of screws, yours will take half that and no all thread... and mine cost me about $60 to build...and if you dont want to build your own im sure for the price of that Q-Logic enclosure a local installer could build you an enclosure.
