I was reading the announcement about the gentleman that died as a result of a blown tire and i had to share this with everyone because on 9-24-05 i almost joined him in the afterlife.
I've had my 1994 740il for about a year and it has been serviced when needed by a bmw specialty shop. Three weeks ago I had my rear brakes serviced and everything seemed fine until yesterday.
While traveling on a local highway at speeds of 70 mph I heard a noise that resembled the sound of a flat tire and felt a slight sway in my rear. I pulled of the highway to check the noise but all my tires were ok. I drove a little further continuing to hear the noise intermittently. I drove about another 1/2 mi until i heard a loud noise, as if something had fallen of the car. I managed to pull to the side of the road only to discover that my rear, driver side, tire was being kept on only by my brake disc. There was one remaining lug in my wheel hub which was unattached. My life was truly spared because it seems that the flat tire sound was the wobble of the tire and the one remaining lug and at 70mph I dont think that I would have survived.
The problem here is that I trusted the mechanic to do the right thing and it nearly cost me my life. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND CHECK WORK DONE TO YOUR CARS WHEN POSSIBLE!!
