Tune-Up Time!

I bought my truck used at about 52,000 miles, it now has about 73,000. I am not too sure about the prior history, so I decided I would go ahead and do a tune up after noticing pretty poor fuel mileage. I am definately doing cap, rotor, plugs, I have a K&N and I just cleaned that, I just got a fuel filter 2,000 miles ago. What else should I get? Wires? O2 sensors? I will definately use the Marvel Mystery oil like BlazerLT suggested, I used Seafoam last time, but that was almost a year ago! Thanks for your help guys!

PCV Valve, and check your wires for corrosion when you swap the cap.

I am away at school right now, and I don't have the time/space to do this myself. How much, a conservative estimate, should this all run me?

US$100 or less.
Do it in the parking lot.

If you can't do the work yourself, you can expect to pay $200+ at a garage.

I seriously think I am only getting like 225 miles to the tank, maybe a bit more, do you think just a tune up will help this average out, or does it appear to be something more serious. Also, how are Magnaflow mufflers, I am tired of running a straight pipe because it is so damn loud for one and for two I have no torque.

do the cap rotor and plugs first before anything.
use the proper AC delco Platinum plugs gapped properly.

Could I really be losing that much mileage because of just that?

I was getting about 175 miles to a full tank (18 gallon tank) told the car dealer I bought it used at something was wrong and they did a full tuneup plus replaced the spider and now for the past 55k miles I am getting anywhere from 300 to 350 to a full tank depending on how I am driving. and just about 225 when I am towing something heavy and using drive instead of over drive

Awesome, I am definately going to be getting a tune up, sounds like a good start, also, should I be replacing those O2 sensors, My truck has over 70k, and I am not sure if they have ever been replaced. Nevermind I just answered my own question of course I should! Any thoughts on a Magnaflow muffler?

Would get a fuel filter on it too, if you are not sure how old it is. Cheap insurance against a fuel pump failure. Should be replaced every 20K in my opinion. Also check the serpentine belt. Plan to get a transmission flush and filter too, sometime soon if you plan on keeping this for a long time. Get this done at a reputable transmission shop. Cost should be $120-$130 for a total flush and filter change. As your truck gets closer to 100K would get the fluids changed in differentials too, and radiator flush also(depending on whether you use green or orange fluid. Refer to your manual)

I just did the differential maybe 4k miles ago, the gasket blew and I had to fix it. The fuel filter is 2k miles old I believe. How do you know if it is dumping fuel at the CPI level? Does that sound likely at 73k miles?

You don't have CPI so don't worry about it.
You have CSFI which is the newer system.

Pull the upper plenum and check for washing... If the passenger side is washed, it's your CPI, if the drivers side is washed it's your nut kit...(washed =non dirty but goldish in color)

In which a bad injector can also cause the same issue/symptoms

He doesn't have the CPI system. And if it was the injectors, he would be getting a code for a specific cylinder misfire.

Yes I am glad my baby is better. But now that there is no more warranty which covered all of the shit that went wrong with in the first 25K I owned, I would like to dump a small block in. I think there was about 6K worth of stuff done to my truck. Everytime I bitched about something they just fixed it and either stuck me in a ford focus (ford mistake) or a one time a pumpkin orange nissan xterra. Which I didn't mind too much other then the non shift on fly 4wheel drive. I think people swurved away from me doing 75mph on the highway when I threw it in 4wheel drive and it made this screaming, howling, explosion of a noise and when I brought it back it was enver the same.....:evillol::rofl::evillol:

I have a quick question what brand cap and rotor are you guys using? I will be doing a tune up soon and would just like to know what your using. Also what about plugs and wires. Ive read that you should stick with AC delco plugs but I am not sure about the wires. I saw BlazerLT say that autolite wires worked but then I guess they ripped when he took them off. So he said to avoid them. Any other input would be appreciated. Thanks

Typically when you rip boots off when you pull them off is lack of dialectric grease...The amount that comes on the wires when you buy them is not enough, I usually add a nice glob to each wire when I put them on... Been using autolites for years, rarely have a prob, and when I do, they're easily replaced under the lifetime warranty...:D

Wires: AC Delco (Not Auto-Lite: very poor workmanship)
Cap and Rotor: Any brand really, they are all the same.
Plugs: AC Delco Platinum only

I used dielectric grease with mine and within a couple months one ripped off when I gently took the connections off the distributor cap.
I will never do that again, they don't even sell them in Canada but I got mine off of ebay and it was a waste of money. I cannot get a replacement.
Within one month two connections ripped off of them and no, I didn't abuse them or hurt them or not install grease of pull on the wires or any other excuse anyone can make up to say that I did the damage.
The wires themselves are excellent, but the connections at each end are absolute garbage.
