You could get the real nice BM short throw, and it is sweet, or you could do what i did; just take the old one out cut an inch off the stem and weld it back together. I cut an inch off and it looks and feels pretty sweet.

Don't go cheap, get a B&M. There are countless stories of cheap stuff breaking off. I've had one for a year now, love it.

I agree with Shpyder.

Cutting the stick itself does not make it a short shifter. The length that the bottom half has to travel is exactly the same length. Cutting off a piece of the top then welding it back on doesnt do anything except drop the height of the top closer down. Shift length and time are both the same. It's still moving the same distance.
I bought an ebay one. No instructions, just pieces on a piece of cardboard covered in pastic wrap. Best money spent yet! Took some time to figure out what each piece was and did, but works great. That thing is not going to break. Solid all the way. Short too. It's all in the wrist now.

Well Im not the type of person that likes to go cheap, but I read somewhere on dsmtuners.com that the B&M replicase are exactly the same. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-99-MITSUBISHI-ECLIPSE-TALON-JDM-RACING-SHORT-SHIFTER_W0QQitemZ7999535993QQcategoryZ33736QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem

if it's shorter in height it will be a shorter throw... but not by much..
but yeah normal short shifters have different bases. So that they compensate for the lack of your throw..

It's not really in the quality of the metal or what not. It's the precision of your shifts and how fast you can accuratly(sc) get it into your selected gear. Yea there are great look alikes but they WONT perform as well as the B&M.

Go with the B&M, I just got it a few weeks ago and its great. It shortend throws about 2 or 2 1/2 inches and it makes a biiiiig difference. I've known people to go with those cheap knock off short throws and they end up breaking if your trying to slam the gears too hard. Its your money though... (cough)B&M(cough)

B&M are to expensive for me right now, what about a JDM for 40$??
Blackcrow64

I'd save another 60 and get the B&M... Just remember, you get what ya pay for. If you decide to go with the JDM, let us know how it works out.

I was thinking about trying out a Fidanza Short shifter for half the price of a B&M. Anyone have one?

I like my stick. Works great, looks good, good throw. I got all the bushings redone too, so everything is solid. Everyone that gets in my car loves the stick. They say its super short and solid. Quality is great! Ill try to take a video of it tm or so, so I can show the throw difference.

I have the fidanza short shifter for the 2g. I ordered it a while ago from Machv with shifter bushings and the symborski shift kit. They delivered it to my parents address instead of my place and my dad took the shifter out of the box and figured all that was left packing stuff. So he tossed out the box with the bushings and shirt kit still in it :banghead: The fidanza shifter is still sitting in its box at my parents and has never been used. I may sell it soon because I may be getting rid of my dsm. If I do sell it it will be cheap because I purchased it so long ago I sure as hell am not missing the money.

Video of the stick. You can adjust it so that either the top gears, or the lower gears are a much shorter throw. Watch when I goto 3rd. It's massively short. Also, listen to the shifts. With the bushings, the shifter is solid with the chasis. Its awesome when driving bc you can hear and feel (sometimes) the shifter when shifting. HArd to explain, but adds to the fun.

Hmmm... I think I might try the Fidanza one. MachV says it's great - http://machv.com/fishsh.html . It reduces the throw, AND it is shorter, height wise. I like the price cause for that, and the Symborski kit for $120 total, it's less than just the B&M short shifter.
EDIT: Did a search on tuners, and I couldn't really find any info regarding 2g's. But on the 1g's, they wouldn't really recommend it because it doesn't have a stopper at the end which could lead to throwing it too far and breaking a shifter fork. Anyone know anything for 2g's?

Ok, here we go again. You DO NOT always get what you pay for! That's what companies that charge way to much would like you to think. Other than the FIPK the B&M shifter is probably the most overpriced thing you can buy for your car. Read this thread for a debate on name brand vs. knockoff. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200908
But think about this: Ever bought a generic drug? Guess what, it was just copied from another company's drug that did all the R&D. And you pay a hell of a lot less for it. And you would think the original must be better or that they did all the R&D and so they deserve it. But that's just not true. The company only spends a small percentage on R&D; Most of the $ is spent on advertising. In the end the original company's bloated price is just pure profit. This whole thing also applies to store brands of products, which I'm sure you have bought. It's the same thing. Also, Consumer Reports has PROVEN the cheaper store brands to be better in a lot of cases than the more expensive big names. When companies charge too much people find another way. Like CDs, they were 5000% more expensive than they should have been and look what heppened.
MY buddy bought a short throw shifter off ebay for his 93 ... civic... but anyways.. no instructions, after the install he said he barely even knoticed a difference in the shifting length. Then my other friend bought a real b&m and boy was it worth it!
Are you talking about the EXACT shifter in the ebay link? Cause if you are, that one is IDENTICAL to the B&M. So how exactly is it gonna perform differently? Read this thread, the mod says they are identical. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154328&page=4&pp=25

Thanks Nayer I was waiting for someone to say that. If its identical it the same (well, duh). If its a piece of metal (e.g: a short shifter) and they look identical then I will go ahead and buy the cheaper one. It just makes sense.
The only I will buy that is brand name is probably electronics!

Well, after reading Nayr's post, and then reading the tuners posts, I think I will go with the ebay knock-off. David-b has the same one, and he says it's great. Tuners says it works just the same as B&M. I just worked a shit load of hours because of Hurricane Wilma that is gonna hit south Florida, so I'm gonna have a nice fat paycheck. Prolly gonna go with the shifter, symborski bushings, and possibly apexi n1 catback :grinyes:

I think you guys will be happy with that shifter. Let us know how it performs. My whole thing is, people (especially kids) nowadays get paid almost nothing. And you shouldn't have your small amount of hard earned money taken by some greedy company. You gotta look out for yourself.
