Backfire

Just bought a 78 datsun pickup for pretty cheap. Low miles engine runs really well. The only problem is that it back fires. It seems to back fire out the exhaust from what i can tell. It does it when i left off that gas to fast at a higher RPM or if i leave it in gear and let the engine slow me down (IE down a hill). Any thoughts?
Thanks, Adam

I like my datsun backfires
If you want to stop the backfires, all I can say is that it will be difficult. The usuall cause of this is excess fuel in the exaust when backing down from high rpm. Leaning out the carb will help, but may make it run hot or lack power off-idle.
My best advice.......learn to love it. :iceslolan
72 Datsun 510
built L20b race engine
dual dell'orto DHLA 40's (no wonder I have backfires...)

there is a actual backfire valve that sits behind the carb, with some tubes hooked to it

vaccum lines and such, huh? I can't help you there, I work mainly with the older smog-exempt Datsuns. Most of that stuff ends up in the trash in my garage.
What engine does that pick-up have?
I used to have a 72 521 pick-up with a stock L16, I put a weber 32/36 DGV on it, it sounded like a chainsaw!
Another idea, look into 510 and Z-car clubs local to you. Most Datsun guys I've met aren't picky, they like all Datsuns and many are willing and able to help.
Drive a Datsun......then decide.
