Is the fuel pump running when it cuts out?

Yeah fuel pupms running, cleaned throttle housing n been told to change 2 relays in the fuse box,ecu relay, fuel pump relay so gonna try n change them see what results are, apparently this is a very common fault on the mark 3 golf.anyone wiv this problem should try this link for for infohttp://www.forum.golfgti.co.uk/index.php?topic=2080.0

The fuel pump relay could be the problem they are prone to dry joints after about 4-5 years no need to replace though the one on my polo went and I simply soldered it again and it still works. But if your fuel pump is running it is probably the ecu relay again I would check for dry joint at least if you see them you know you have found your problem.

Have you pulled a plug wire when it won't restart to see if you're getting spark?

Hi all
after reading the this thread (and the ones linked 2 it) i now have a list of several things it could be that cause this cutting out issue....
Of them i have changed the ECU relay, to no avail (car cut out on breaking 2hrs after installing it)
I was wondering what to try next as im not keen on getting ripped off by VW - especially as they dont really seem to know the actual source of the problem...
there seems to be a good shout for this Ecotek power boost or cleaning the throttle body..? just wondering if anyone has actually ever fully solved the problem...?
cheers

well ave tried nearly everything now and its still cutting out 2 sets ov relays throttle body cleaned , leads, plugs dizzie cap, rotar arm, coil, thing am thinking now is me coil again cos as soon as it gets warm it cuts out if left for a few mins starts straight away.tried spraying wd40 on it and it actually stops it cutting out till it dries off wiv heat, gonna try new coil again.if not that gonna start changing some sensors like temp, oil pressure n crank sensor see if that works

I recently purchased a Golf 2.0 8v GTI colour concept which for the first week of owning was a dream, unfortunatly that didnt take long to change, i have pretty much the same problem, the car will run for a random length of time and just decide to cut itself off, driving or standing! Thing is after its cut out its impossible to start for at least ten minutes, after which it will quite happily start and run fine (untill the next time) I work at a garage and we have a diagnostics machine that has told us its the 'Immobilizer Data Link' something to do with the coded key? just thought maybe that could be whats wrong with yours if you dont already know? Have you sorted yours yet? help with mine would be much appreciated, any ideas on what or where this data link is? Cheers

after cleaning the throttle housing out did you adapt the throttle body settings?you can only do this using VAG diagnostic equipment.I own a 98' mk3 8v gti. i had the same problem so i cleaned the throttle body and adapted it and its been fine since

Have you changed the actual distributer not just the cap, my 8v has been doing this for weeks and finally just wouldnt start other day, so had to have aa out.(towed to garage and waiting to see if it is the disributor)
A few other things i have had suggested to me are, the hall sensor (related to distributor) the ignition switch, and also the immobiliser, especially vw fitted logic 900 (conlog). These are all common problems to golfs. im not an expert but hope this helps.

New here too so exuse me if this has been covered already. Had similar problem on my 8v and took ages to resolve. Ended up completely dieing on me and refusing to start at all. Turned out to be, after much testing!, a broken connection within the ECU itself. It had been cracked and breaking the connection intermitently but then finally gave up. Simple enough to fix with a multimeter and a touch of solder.
Hope this helps.

check your coil pack, its against the firewall on the drivers side. when your car cuts off its it damp/raining out? try spraying a light mist of water over the coilpack while the cars running, if it sparks its no good.
